Shut Up and Run.

at the gym: day one February 19 2007

so i started my gym membership today.

it’s at a very tiny gym down town.

its been there forever, in the bottom of one of the oldest plaza’s in town & i think a friend of mine and i worked out there once in highschool, just goofing around being cute and thin.

you should know that this is way outside my comfort zone.  to enter this gym, you walk down a flight of stairs and find yourself immediately smack dab in the middle of the gym. i hate walking into a room full of strangers. i hate it. i know it’s stupid…it;s the same thing as my finish line anxiety…but i can’t help it. so for me getting there? really IS half the battle.

i quickly found the cardio equipment tucked away in a side room…fabulous..i can hide and run and turn up my iPod. so i played around on the treadmill, it’s in miles…and i kept screwing it up and resetting it trying to use a program [they kept slowing down to a crawl] and then just turning it off and starting again plain old running. so i think i ran 30-40 minutes.

on these wide wide treadmills which i am totally in love with.

and then i sort of strolled over to the weight area…where i stretched a bit and searched the walls for instructions.

gym boy {nice ass} hooked me up with a “3 day split routine” mostly dumbbells (shut up Jon) and he kept saying…oh i think you can do more weight than that…here try this one.

and i could….which was fabulous. my arms are shakey and i know that tomorrow? i will have trouble lifting my arms to blow dry my hair, i expect that after joining a gym after so long. i did enjoy the dumbbells surprisingly enough, i am usually partial to those gyms full of machines that always slightly to big for me so i rarely get the proper form. i enjoyed the free weights. go figure.

and then.

AND THEN.

he had me sit in this contraption and lean way over…oh look you’re too short…stand on your tip toes…ok no swing back up and do this strange reverse sit up type thing…oh it’s awesome for your lower back

yeah i’m pretty sure i will not be putting on my own pants tomorrow (shut up Jon).

oh, how I miss that *sigh*

There are just so many things to say here, Pam. You with your dumbbells, having someone else to put your pants on for you. I’m beside myself.

But, hey, good job getting to the gym. I’m not sure I would have put you on that back lift thing on the first day. Its rough on your back if your muscles are weak.

And be careful of Mr. Fitness trainer too. They aren’t always trained in anything. Weight lifting should be tough and make you work, but sharp pains are bad. Keep an eye on him. Uh, and not on his butt.

Awesome! I know what you mean (about walking into a strange place) - that’s probably why I don’t go to a gym.

And I have dumbells in the garage, but not a nice ass.

Keep up the good work!
