When Efficiency Just Isn’t Efficient September 25 2006

So Chris and I both had to work yesterday
The boys had to go to their Grandfather’s and no one would be home until the earliest 3ish.

SO I thought what to do for dinner tonight? A perfect opportunity to make beef stew in the slow cooker.

So in the morning I chatted with Jon, fed my boys, showered myself and then started the stew with 15mins before we had to leave.

It was AFTER I had all the meat cut up and the onion diced that I realized we had NO potatoes. No big deal, the stew could cook and simmer in it’s heavenly loveliness until Chris came at 2 and tossed in spuds.

It wasn;t until I added it to the crockpot and topped it up with beef stock and veggie broth that I noticed we were out of carrots, well not completely out of carrots, I had about 6 baby carrots left over from Noah’s lunch last week.

And while I was tossing those in I noticed that we were also out of turnip.

No time for moaning I rushed out the door to work.

I spoke to Chris at some point and told him to grab something for dinner on his way home since he was finished before the grocery stores closed and I had only partially prepared dinner.

Great.

And then? Chris worked late and came to my store just as i was closing up. He’d left his wallet at home and wanted to know if I had any cash.

And I did.

$2.87

So we went home to find his bank card.

And by then the grocery stores were closed. So we ordered a pizza for dinner.

Late.

Clever of you to use the left over baby carrots. I’ll be forwarding to you my turnip-free, potato-free beef stew slow-cooker recipe. Mind you, it goes really well over mashed potatoes…

Turnips go MUCH better blended up in split pea soup, I think.

turnips?, thank goodness for delivery pizza! broth and a few carrots wouldn’t be so bad with crackers.

Good stew has to have both turnips and carrots! Potatoes are a must too but you can have them boiled and mashed. That’s my opinion anyway, just leave the parsnips out of it and throw them in the garbage or feed ‘em to the pigs!

Turnip? Who uses turnip? The only people that use Turnips are Yupers that make pasties.
