Shut Up and Run.

so I ran with my neice this morning. It was a great run for me. I pushed us up some nice hills. Not such a good run for the neice. She has developed pain on the inside of her calves…right above the ankle. What do you think it is? Shin splints? Wrong shoes?

Don’t EVEN get me started on how the fitted her for running shoes.
“These are popular”
“ummm don’t you want to see me walk or run…or like stand or anything?”
“No…you say you walk like a duck…this should do…”

AAH!

I’ve told her to ice them tonight (off & on of course) and to see how they feel next time.

What she wants to know is, can she run if it hurts. Not any easy question for me since my shins USUALLY hurt to some degree. But I told her know…running in pain is not good…especially for a beginner.

Yup, shin splints. Hers are caused by weak calf muscles. She’s probably doing alot of pushoff with her calves too, which will aggrevate it. She needs to back it off or it will become much much worse. She needs to give her muscles time to adjust. Think of this pain as the warning shot. The next time it comes back worse.

How fast were you going? When I started running I was going way to fast (haha) and my shins hurt. What’s her form like?

Jon and LouBob got it covered so all I have to add is that she should quit doing that. ;)

I was also going to say that the hills must have done it. Maybe next time just take her on some flats and rolling little hills. Her calves need to get stronger. Tell her to take 2 advil and eat cookies. That should do the trick!
