An early morning run

Filed under: General,Random Thoughts While Running — beverly at 2:19 pm on Wednesday, September 14, 2005

I got up at 5:30 a.m. to run today before my husband went to work. Here are my thoughts at that ridiculous hour:

1. Huh?
2. How does this Forerunner work again?
3. Huh?
4. It’s still dark.
5. I’m not running on the paths when it is this dark.
6. I guess I’ll run on the sidewalks.
7. I’m grouchy at this hour.
8. My shadow looks slimmer somehow.
9. Suddenly, I’m not so grouchy.
10. What is my race plan?
11. So far, my plan is to race.
12. It took me long enough to get to that part of the plan. Gee.
13. Is it bad to go into a 5 k with no race plan?
14. My instructor certainly thought so.
15. I’ll ask the RBF.
16. They’ll know.
17. Am I really going to make getting up this early a habit?
18. Funny. I never thought running would be a habit.

I have nothing valuable to say except look at you – eight months you’ve been blogging!

Race plan: Run faster than normal without falling down.

Race plan for 5K: if you’ve put in the miles above 3.1 with any regularity, then run like hell without falling over. If you’ve been tentative then go slow the first mile, kick it up the second and burn off the tanks on the third.
P.S. Smile for the camera!!

David said it pretty well! In regard to your early morning running – I started almost all my long runs at around 6:15 in the morning while the moon was still out. The air is fresh and clean, its quiet, cool and if your run long enough maybe you are rewarded with a nice sunrise! I loved these runs!

I *love* my mornings..it’s quiet….and I get the run in. Somehow later in the day, I make excuses. Race strategy? I’m a slow starter. Then I pick a point about a mile from the end where I turn it on (IF I have anything left to turn on!) Oh, warm up first. And breathe deeply:)

I love morning runs too, but am somehow stuck in an afternoon rut.

I tend to go the other way on races – start off as hard as I think I can maintain, and then either up or down the pace as the race develops.

But I usually blow up at the end of the race, anyway.

I just wanted to say that I’m so excited that you’re doing a 5k! It just doesn’t seem like that long ago that you thought you’d never race. I predict a stunning race day record and an addiction to racing, coming up!
