So what am I doing about this, anywho??

Thanks for all of your supportive words and emails about my frustration. I have decided not to dwell on this and get myself all ticked off and want to eat Oreo cookies by the double digits …. NO.

I decided to sign up for a Learn to Run class.

I read about this awhile ago. It’s a weekly gig that ends in a nice local 5k on September 18th. It starts this week. After reading about this, the following happened:

–A previous engagement I had for September 18th suddenly cleared on my calendar, not at my doing;

–I ran into my friend, Corrie, who is one of those kindred souls that you always leave a conversation wishing you had more time for. We watched our sons at Tae Kwon Do last week, and she said: “Oh, I just ran a 5k. I took a course.” Really!??! I did not even know she had the desire to run. She was very affirming about the course, and encouraged me to take the clinic. She’ll be running the 5k on the 18th too.

–Last night, I read Dawn’s post about her Learn To Run clinic that she leads. It sounded fun and … doable, really.

So, I called. I paid. I’m in!

How does this fit in with this bothersome ankle? I figure that I’m going to be starting at a point that I actually was a couple of months ago, and building endurance at the pace of the class. I still will pursue some supportive medical attention in the meanwhile. And I’ll try not to whine too much here about that. (Confession: I truly hope I’m OK to run in a group. I hope I can keep up. I hope my pace is OK. It’s all that I’m OK, You’re OK stuff, y’know. I get to insert insecurity here in brackets; it’s my blog.) So I’m thinking that I’ll start it out, and see if the ankle responds.

And pray a lot.

Because, I gotta say: I really want a race experience. I won’t know til I try.

I took a 10k clinic in 2000. It was the best thing ever for my running. Good luck and most of all have fun.

I read Dawn’s blog on the group experience, I think it will be a great way to get a jumpstart and make it to the finish line. I can imagine that you will receive overwhelming support through the tough times, if they show up.

I guess I’m surprised you’ve never “raced”…You’ll be hooked, guaranteed. I am looking forward to hearing about your running clinic! I wonder if you’ll learn somthing about form or training techniques that will help you with the ankle pain?

This sounds great and I’ll bet it will dispel alot of your feelings of insecurity. You will be beginning at the beginning with others who are doing the same – and who will be coming with the same insecurities. You’ll all help each other!

Good luck with the ankle quest – and gripe all you want ;)

Way to go! Do what you can do. One of my running friends has a saying: “Only those who try to go beyond their limits know where their limits are.” Looking forward to hearing about your classes.

The stars are aligning for your race life! That’s marvelous. Don’t sweat the little stuff. Train at your own pace even if it means running alone or turning back before the group. You have to answer your own bell.
I’m happy for you. Enjoy it and talk sweetly to that ankle. The joy of the race is not far away.

I think its awesome you have the oportunity to join a clinic.. I sure would jump at the chance.. I think why I try to get to any little run I can (5 now) is for the experience of running with other people,,,even tho I am still basically running alone,, people are around me,, and I find that very inspirational.. Good luck with your ankle, and have fun.

That’s a great idea, Beverly. It would be nice to have a regular group to train with. I hope that ankle clears up, and don’t worry about whining here. Its your blog and whining is allowed. (It had better be or I’m in big trouble). :)

Way to be proactive! Maybe someone at the clinic will have better advice about your ankle than a non-running doctor.

Whining or no whining, we’ll be waiting to see how it goes!
