One Step at a Time

thinking ahead to May …

In May, I am going to a national conference in Vancouver, BC … I am spending a couple days on my own at the conference, and then my sister-in-law (who happens to be one of my best friends) is flying to spend two nights with me.

I have spent a lot of time in Vancouver over the years, probably travelling there 4-5 times per year. It is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, in my opinion. My favorite part is the seawall … I love walking it. It’s the best of all worlds: people-watching and being able to to sit on a rock by the sea and write or think. Mmmmmmm.

As I was finalizing plans for this trip, I had a thought that made me grin. This year, I’ll RUN along the seawall. It’s my first trip there as a runner … how fun is that going to be!??!? I can’t wait!

Here’s what I want to know: what is your favorite not-your-everyday place to run? A certain city? Trail?

My favourite run was in Puerto Vallarta Mexico. Even though we partied ’til 5 am every night, I still managed to be out running by 9:30. It was really cool to be out running along the main street, not having to worry about getting to work or anything like that, while all the Mexicans hurried off to work. Every once in a while I get to work early enough to head out for a run before work – and on the really hot days of summer, those runs remind me of me trip to Mexico.

Stockholm Sweden–gorgeous city with lots of water. You can run on some neat trails.

D.C. as well. And Virginia Beach on the boardwalk is great, too. Kirsten

I haven’t been to Vancouver since I was a kid. Sounds fun.

Even though the marathon itself has kicked my ass twice, Dallas Drive in Victoria, BC is so amazing. I could run there forever. It’s an oceanside path. Lovely. :)

I have two friends that head out to Vancouver every February for a weekend of running and do that route. It helps break up the long Ontario winters.

One of the most surprisingly scenic routes I have run was in Palm Spring, it was the first morning I was there. I started out at 5.30am it was still dark but the paths through the resort and lake were lite. As the sun came up the whole area was surrounded my these gorgeous browny red hills, it was breath taking.

That photo is gorgeous! It looks like a great place for running.

Since I don’t travel much (read: ever), my favorite place to run so far is in Key West. I went there a few years a go with a friend and his family. Our first night there, my friend and I went running and got lost so we ended up running some kind of loop around the island. At one point, a very bored cop clocked us. I was too surprised to stop and ask him how fast we were going.

Best of all time is Santo Stefano, an island just off of Sardinia.

Best sometime run is Jamestown Island – rolling, with a breathtaking views around every turn, from almost every road.

i’m still getting caught up….hope your doing ok, sorry to hear about that other stuff you metioned previously.

my favorite run so far was in DC last summer. it was my first time “On The Mall” so that probably has something to do with it. i was not running regularly at the time…i ran too far along the mall all at once and my feet got swollen and they hurt like a son of a, later that day. great place to run though (i went early in the morning so no one was around…i brought the digicam and took some cool shots).

Hmmm, favorite place to run is probably near Westerly, RI. I ran my first 5K, every corner brings back memories of being a kid, views of the pond and the ocean. Love it.

I really don’t have a favorite place. I know it sounds stupid but I don’t “like” running. It kinda spoils where I am running. I’d rather walk in the nice place. Actually, I’d rather nap there. A nap would be best.

I did go running in Cape Cod and that was nice. It was an old train line I think. It was flat and there were houses and stuff. That was nice.

I love running up and down the dark trails of the Black Forest near Buehlertal, Germany (see http://www.buehlertal.de/ for a picture). I try to do this every summer, I did my first half-marathon in this area – the first “hill” we went up was a ski-slope – urgh!

Running along the seawall will be a wonderful experience. I haven’t run there but J and I did rollerblade there.

I forgot to mention that I haven’t been running long enough to accumulate many experiences.

I’ve done more rollerblading. The seawall in Vancouver was one of my favorite places. Another was the trail around Mackinac Island in Michigan.

NOT my favorite run? Gatineau Park, just north of Ottawa, I guess.

Honestly, though, my everyday running locations are fantastic. Up and down the Rideau Canal, along and across the Ottawa River, and down the Rideau River. Whether it’s running by the tulips at Dow’s Lake, checking out ice sculptures in Confederation Park at Winterlude, stopping by Mooney’s Bay to see Dragon Boat races, running underneath Parliament or seeing it from across the water, there are SO MANY reasons why I love where I run.

The ING National Capital marathon (and for the most part the half marathon) follow much of this area. Anyone who’s run them can attest to how fantastic this area is for running.

wow…that’s a tough one. i’ve got so many wonderful trails around the places i’ve lived and currently live, that it’d be hard to come up with just one.

i’d have to say that running along highway 1 in san simeon, ca was the best. turkey vultures hovering overhead, hearst castle on the mountain, the sound of elephant seals and cows mooing…what a fantastic place to run.
