Workout Report and Questions

Filed under: General — beverly at 9:50 am on Saturday, February 19, 2005

This morning I was at the leisure centre …. warmed up for 10 with fast walking, and then did run/walk combinations for 45 minutes, followed by 10 minute cooldown and then stretching. Then went to the gym and did 25 mins on the elliptical trainer, and my upper body on weights.

I am spent! Skated with the kids last night, and my butt aches so much from that that it was whining the whole time during this workout. My butt is a whiner. :)

Some observations:

–I’m getting able to run further, and walk less. Today I was running 10 – 11 mins , walking for one. Did four sets of that. No where near ready for a race, I know, but really, that’s amazing for me.
–I really don’t stretch enough unless someone is leading me, ie. like in that class I took yesterday. I’m not sure why I always want to rush through this but I have to slow down.

As I was running, I thought of a couple of questions:

–Is it beneficial to run backwards? I saw about 7 or 8 people doing that today. Hmmmmm. I really know nothing about this.
–Although I do add lunges in my workout, I do not do side stride running. Also seemed to be the “Move of the Day” on the track today.

Should I be adding these things to my workout? Will it make me a better runner … or does it just add variety / work different muscles?

I’ve heard of some people running backwards, but never really “got” it. In my books, it’s just one more way to injure yourself (well, if you’re clumsy like me)

Hi! Sounds like you’re doing so well in your training to me. It’s hard to fit everything in with a family and all.

You talk about doing better when you stretch with someone else. I am that way. I always do better when I’m in a class, etc. It just motivates… I take yoga and that is a huge help with stretching. I need more flexibility. I bought a mat to do some yoga at home. Well, it hasn’t happened (at home) yet. smile.

Hope you’re having a good weekend with family. I saw the pics of your kids and they’re darling. Kirsten

I have concluded that for me, right now, forwards is enough of a challenge. :)

wow,, that you can run for 10 or 11 minutes is awesome!! OK,, now I have to ask,, What kind of race are you planning to run? How come you dont think your no where near ready for it? What type of goal do you have in mind when you do race???? Why Im asking this, is last year I entered a 8km, and I could NOT run for 10 min straight,, but I set my goal to just get through it.. It was great to be a PART of the experience,, not to beat any records. This year,, Im feeling awesome to be able to do 3-1,, and I am going to enter a 6km in March.. Its for the experience, AND FUN>> Just wanted to know, What qualifies a person to be READY for a race?

Heather: I just want to run a 5k … I guess I just assumed that I’d need to run the whole way….now you’ve got me thinking. Did you run/walk your 8k?? Tell me more!

I’ve ran/walked 3 full marathons and 7 half marathons and numerous shorter “races”. There’s nothing that says you can’t run/walk a race. If you’re doing 45 min + a warm up and cool down I’d say that you are very ready for a 10K – maybe even a 15 K if you really wanted to challenge yourself!

I think I’ve been thinking inside the box … that I would have to be able to “run” 5k before I can race. Why have I not thought of this before??? And you’d think I’d have decorated this box a little nicer, I’ve been in it so long … ;) … Now I have some thinking to do … thanks, Marie and Heather.
