back again

Sunday I ran in the Celebrate Life Half Marathon in Rock Hill, NY.  As with previous times, this was a fabulous race.  Very hilly compared to others I have been in, but each year the hills seem smaller.  Except for the giant hill at the start.  Heading up that one I took my time and saved something for the end.  My time was halfway in between my best and worst, so I was pretty happy with it.  My former running partner was volunteering and it was a nice relief to see her smiling face at the halfway point.

As my reward for a good race, my back blew out on Wednesday morning.  Yea.  I’ve been in the house ever since.  Today is the first day I can actually stand up straight.  I can sit for very long and can’t stand for very long.  And quite frankly, I’m really sick of lying down.  I’ve managed to stretch out almost flat on the reclining sofa, so that I can type and lie down at the same time.

Last week I stopped at a used bookstore that I had seen many times but was never there when they were open (Fri, Sat. Sun).  So I went for a short visit during lunch.  The place looks like it was an old barn or small house.  The insides are are stuffed from floor to ceiling with old books, loosely organized by topic.  Children’s.  History.  Fiction.  Etc.  The foyer is packed full of unsorted books.  Just the smell of the place is welcoming, if you like the smell of old books.  The place was heated by a pot belly stove in the middle of the main room.  The basement was filled with paperbacks and the upstairs seemed to house mostly non-fiction with topics like Geography and Government.  I would estimate there were at least 20,000 books in that building.  If I spent all day there, I could not read every title.

I pulled a few books to take home:

Run Fast – Hal Higdon – I always wanted that one but never got around to buying it.

The Complete Book of Running – Jim Fixx – Another one to have in the running library.

Twelfth Night – W. Shakespeare – This was a small hardcover version published by Yale University Press in 1954.

DreamThorp – Alexander Smith – This was published in 1864.  I like the hard leather cover and the gold inlaid design in the front.

All that fun for only $14.  Seemed like a good deal.  There were a lot of other books I wanted, but some were too expensive.  An old torn up bible from 1800 but it was $100.  Too rich for my blood.

My writing has ground to an abrupt halt.  I’ve painted myself into a corner.  I’ve been trying to just get words down on paper (figuratively), but the plot has changed so much that the beginning doesn’t match, and motivations of the characters seems very odd now.  In fact, the entire premise seems horrendously illogical.  I was being guided by what I felt each character would do next.  But when I go back to the beginning, their early behavior doesn’t fit.  I guess that means that I didn’t know my characters well enough at the beginning.

Margaret Atwood gives this advice:

“Don’t sit down in the middle of the woods. If you’re lost in the plot or blocked, retrace your steps to where you went wrong. Then take the other road. And/or change the person. Change the tense. Change the opening page.”

Good advice.  Its so very hard.  I hate to go back and cut out things I liked.  I had heard it was Faulkner who said to “kill your darlings”.  He is referring to cutting things from your writing that you find so appealing that you can’t be objective.  Maybe its a scene or some dialogue that you can’t give up because you like it so much.  I guess I just need to be cautious that I don’t keep something in that doesn’t fit.

Which brings me back to the problem.  The current place in the storyline no longer fits with the beginning.  Its hard to describe without telling the story (which I’m not ready to do yet), so let’s use a Star Wars analogy.

In Star Wars, Luke is looking to 1) rescue Princess Leah and 2) avenge his father’s death.  But what if his original goal was to marry Leah.  Once he rescued her, then he would simply be trying for the rest of the movie to get her to leave with him and run away to the Chapel O’ Galactic Bliss, which 1) doesn’t make for a good movie and 2) makes the whole Death Star assault seem like a pointless diversion from the main topic.  Fortunately George Lucas was smart enough to change the plot and delete the wedding scene.

This is basically where I am.  No, there’s no wedding.  But I have taken the characters someplace away from their original goal, and now their actions conflict entirely with what they wanted.  I know this happens in life, but I don’t want it to happen here, simply because by the time they reach the end of the book, the closing scene will not make any sense at all.

So, I need to retrace to where I started and decide if I started wrong or if I took a wrong turn.  Nothing really gets cut, just saved elsewhere.

Ok, so terrible things are going on in my life at the moment.  My brother-in-law is gravely ill, so we are all very tense and concerned.  Trying to do the best we can to help the situation, but most likely not doing a good job of it.  Say some prayers for him please.

Running is (miraculously) still chugging along.  My pace is now firmly below 9:00/mile, which is very encouraging.  These are morning runs, so they are even more impressive to me.   My legs feel tired quite often though.  My left calf is especially tight and sore.   I took Sunday off after my 9 mile run on Saturday and will likely rest tomorrow too.

This weekend the diet fell apart.  I just was not able to stay away from the fridge or the snacks.  Too much anxiety over family and work (yeah work is crazy too).   Bleh.  Not looking forward to weigh-in on Monday.  My weight hasn’t budged in weeks and this weekend will make it worse.

Writing is so-so.  I got some inspiration this week and churned out about three thousand words.  Looking back, I started this project last July, so I should be nearing the end at this point.  But I’m not.  I only have about 23,000 words, half of which should be cut, so I’m light years from being done.  I haven’t been able to pull the plot together yet, and some characters are nowhere near developed.  I’m still trying to decide on names!  If I have to change one more name, I might cry.  Seriously.

You mean like the best excuses I have?  Easy.  My foot hurts, I’m tired, its raining.

Distance because I can’t do tempo runs correctly and speedwork HURTS

Yes.  I have an Excel spreadsheet with caloric values for every food I ever ate.  Psychotic.

  Chicken sandwich on wholewheat with Miracle Whip and tomato.

Instant mashed potatoes with bacon and cheddar cheese.

  My left calf and shin.  Grrrrrr.

Yes in Jr. High School.  My nurse looked like Nurse Goodbody.  No complaints.

Kinda fell off the radar again

Seems like I lost my posting momentum.  There’s lots of stuff going on right now, not all of which I can really talk about on the web.

But the good news is that, although I have not been posting my food, I have been tracking it.  I’ve been careful all during the week to make sure I am not adding extra at night.  The weekends are another challenge for me.  I tend not to eat regular meals, and sometimes find myself snacking.  I know that the meals I eat during the week will keep me on track, so this weekend my goal is to stay with the same meal plan that I have during the week.  I’m good so far today.

One other weekend challenge has been camping with the Boy Scouts.  When you are sleeping outside in the winter, you cannot be low on fuel.  Have to “feed the furnace” as they say.  So, low calorie diets really do not mix well with winter camping.  I know that I personally need a serious lunch and dinner on days that I am sleeping in the cold, or I will not stay warm.

So last weekend’s camp out in the woods did not help my diet much.  Also, when I go off my diet, I tend to just throw it all away.  I can’t seem to just stop at what I need.  Somehow the cookies speak very loudly.

Fortunately, my weight is still going down.  I’m down about 5 pounds now.  Its not too bad.  I was targeting about 2 pounds a week.  Monday is actually the official weigh-in day, do that’s why weekend eating is so important.  Don’t want my body to go back into storage mode for two days before I check my weight.

So the running has been good.  I’ve gotten out for 3 miles in the mornings, 3 days a week.  The pace sucks but oh well.  Today I need to do 5 miles.  Thursday morning we had our first big snowfall (4 inches), and I got the pleasure of running in that for the first time in a year.  I had forgotten how much harder it is to run in the snow.  I had YakTrax but it was still tough and my legs ached the next morning.  Friday’s are still rest days.

So that’s what’s up.  Haven’t been posting but I am staying on track more or less.

 

getting faster bit by bit

I ran 3 more miles today and I noticed that my finished times are slowly getting faster.  Not by a lot, but maybe 10-15 seconds each time, even though its getting later in the week.  I’m hoping this trend continues.  I haven’t done a good job of getting out the door early.  I’ve been getting to bed late and its making it hard to get up.

Also?  It was damn cold this morning:

I was going through my training plan and looking at an upcoming Half Marathon that I want to do.  The timing is a bit short (two weeks) but its not unreasonable.  While doing that I noticed that my training just happens to coincide with the precise plan I would need for the Vermont City Marathon.  A serious case of cart-before-the-horse, but still.

I’m having trouble with the food blogging.  I eat the same thing for breakfast everyday so the picture is of the same thing.  Is it copping out to just skip the breakfast or to just use the same picture over and over?   My camera takes very high resolution pictures and I have to scale them all down so I can upload them.  There may be a setting where this can be adjusted but I don’t have the patience to find it.

Dinner at least gets some variation.   For dinner last night I had a chicken sandwich (on very smooshed bread!)

But tonight I was over at my parents’ house and mom had made pot roast.  I forgot to get a picture of my plate so I took a picture of the leftovers in the pot.  I really didn’t have very much.  I was being good.

It was just he beaters though.   Trust me, I wanted to DRINK the bowl of batter.  Although, as I write this and see all the food again, I’m getting hungry.  So I added one more snack to today.

This is Hormel turkey pepperoni and Cabot 75% reduced fat cheddar, with horseradish mustard on top.  Yum!  :)  Its a reasonably low number of calories, but enough to quiet my stomach.

3 miles and more food

This morning I got out for my three mile run, albeit exceptionally late.  Tomorrow I will do better.  Here’s my food for the day below.  Since I basically eat the same thing every day, I’m going to start just taking pictures of it all in one big group food shot.  No need to re-explain myself.

I was able to take pictures of lunch in the morning at the same time I ate breakfast, so the two meals kinda blend together here.

All-bran, ground flax seed and milk (same as everyday)

Lunch has steamed carrots and broccoli with chicken breast.

I wrap some of the chicken stuff in a small pita. Good fiber. :)

Also with lunch is my daily spinach salad with 1 tomato, some sliced yellow pepper, and some cucumber.

Italian dressing (3 tablespoons) made with extra virgin olive oil and dressing mix.

My apple and selzer water (zero calories).

Desert at lunch is 100 calories of dark (>85% cacao) chocolate.

This was part of my dinner at home.  Whole wheat bread with fat-free mozzarella cheese and Hormel turkey pepperoni.

my four mile “long” run

I ran four miles this morning.  Not exactly a long run in the traditional sense, but longer than anything I have run in a very long time.  So maybe its a “longer” run instead.

3 more after a rest

I just got back from my morning 3 miles.  Not too bad.  I took a day off yesterday because my legs were exceptionally sore.  Having not run for a month or two, multiple days in a row didn’t work out so well.

But this morning I felt pretty good.  The soreness was gone and I had a bit more energy at the end.  Still a very slow pace, but I can feel it coming back.  My form wasn’t so awkward today and I was able to relax my shoulders much more than before.

Yes, I can still feel my belly jiggling.  Working on that too.  ;)

two weeks and no post!

Ok, so I’ve been AWOL for two weeks.  Yikes!

Let’s see.

Hurricane came through the area.  We lost power for about 36 hours but no major damage here.

Still playing too many video games but working on cutting it back.

Still fat.  :(

I’m running about 4 days during the week (just 3 miles) in the morning, and then a long run on the weekend.

Today I ran the New Haven Road Race 20K.  Horrendous pace, but what can I expect?  My training has been abysmal and my weight is off the charts.  Plus, the weather was incredibly hot and humid.  Add all those together and fat old man running is not going to do well.

My novel is kinda stalled.  I keep reinventing the damn plot, but I think that just means I wasn’t sure where it was going in the first place.  Big pieces are falling into place now so its moving again.

Um, that’s the big stuff.

so much going on

I’ve had alot going on since my last post.

The writing is going well.  I’ve had the plot change around dramatically, which is good I guess.  I’ve had a hard time letting go of an opening chapter that I really liked.  It was the first thing I wrote down, so it was tough to send it to the chopping block.  But it no longer fit with the rest of the storyline, so tore it apart into little pieces.  Saved all the clever wording, but let the meat of it go to the cutting room floor (so to speak).

Its amazing how I see things so differently now that I am writing.  I find myself stealing names for characters.  I see plot lines and ideas in everything people do.  I keep small notepads with me so I can write ideas down (which becomes somewhat hazardous while driving).

I’ve really started to see familiar patterns in other books.  Things that other writers have given as tips and guidelines for writing great fiction.  Suddenly, reading a fictional story takes on an entirely different feel.  I find myself zeroing in on the main character and looking for what they “want”.  It seems like they always want something, and then for the rest of the book, they are trying to get it.  They want money, or a lover, or freedom, or a magical ring, or something.

Speaking of fiction, I finally saw the last Harry Potter movie.  Ended up seeing it at the iMax because the show times worked out best.  I don’t think it was really worth it in 3D, but it wasn’t aweful.  Avatar was worth it, not so much Harry Potter.

I was happy to see it all end.  I didn’t want to keep waiting to see how they would play out that monster of a final book.  I think Rowling got pressured at the end to close it up fast.  It was like she used one dream/death sequence and the pensive bowl thing to explain the entire book series.  And then we go “Aaahaaaa, that’s why that happened.” Sigh.  I never did like the ending of it all.  And the prologue was too shmalzy.

But I was happy to see Bella Lestrange one last time.  :)

I’ve been running.  I ran two days last week and I did weight training twice as well.  Its going ok.  Very slow and sluggish, but at least I am moving.

I ran in the Warrior Dash this weekend.  I guess you can’t say ran.  I walked much of it.  Why?  Why would I walk in a race, you ask?  Well, for one thing it was on a SKI SLOPE.  Oh yes, the race went up a ski slope and then back down.  So about 98% of us walked it up, because running up a 70 degree incline for a mile and a half, truly sucks.

There were all kinds of obstacles, but the most welcome one was the giant pit of cold muddy water that waited for us at the top.  I was never so happy to get wet and dirty.  We had big logs in there to climb and roll over.  I ended up with big bruises all over me.  There was a big mud pit near the end with barbed wire to crawl under.  And a giant slip and slide that really hurt because there were rocks under it.

But I did get to jump over fire at the end and I did eat a giant turkey leg.  :)

The warrior dash is ok.  Very tough and the food is ultra fail: bananas and cups of water.  Everything else you pay for.  The turkey leg was $8.  We did get a free shower to wash off the mud.

So today my legs hurt and my feet hurt too.   And I have some bruises to show at work tomorrow.

3 more miles

I ran three miles tonight after a reminder from Bill that New Haven is a short two and a half months away.  In addition, the Boilermaker is in 25 days (and 11 hours).

Also, I had my annual physical last week, and while my doc (whom I love) said my labs came out great, she also said that she was concerned that my total cholesterol had jumped to 180.  Normally, it runs around 130.  Hmmm.

Time to stop the whining and do more running.  Maybe less junky food too.

Any help with losing 20 pounds by next month?
