I ran my three miles tonight, and it was 3 °F outside. My mustache was frozen before I got to the end of the street. But I did run.
In other strange news, a man at church noticed my leather jacket and asked if it was a bomber jacket. I said no, it was from L. L. Bean. He said he used to have three of them because he flew a B-26 (I think) bomber in WWII in the Pacific. He then said he couldn’t shake a Japanese hand even today because they had “butchered” his comrades. I’m not sure if he considered the fact that it was because they were flying in a bomber at the time. I didn’t press the point with him.
When I am in your area this weekend racing it is going to be pretty @#$$ cold! But you will be camping/??? As in outside?
Right, and because a little something called the ATOMIC BOMB didn’t kill anyone.
you’re hard core. I’ve been such a wimp this winter about running outside, it’s been mostly treadmill. But I think I’m going to venture out tomorrow to ski. I think.
I knew a B-29 bomber years ago. They were the ones who fire-bombed Tokyo (and other cities). His plane was shot down, crew taken prisoner, and almost executed for war crimes when it was discovered they were flying a B-29. A Japanese officer stopped the executions, took them to a POW camp, and then drove them blindfolded to Hiroshima. “One bomb” was all he could say when he showed them the devastation (the bombs had been dropped but Japan had not yet surrendered — and they were the first Americans to see it). In later years, he and his wife reconnected with that officer in Japan and they remained friends the rest of their lives. He was one of the kindest, most gracious men I’ve known.
Apparently the B-26 was kind of squirrelly and didn’t have great success in the Pacific though it was used. It wasn’t as well suited for the longer ranges required there.
It’s snowing in Boston and I’m now off to the MIT gym where I can run on the indoor track!
