I forgot to title this post
Ok, the first week at the new job has been really hectic. SO MUCH to learn! I don’t like to talk about where I work because in this case it will be easy place it. Must not blog about work. But…
Let me say that its a manufacturing job, NOT patent work. I get make stuff again! We make polymer laminate materials. There’s about a million different parts numbers and materials that go into them and everyone has them memorized. I’m a little frazzled. Also? I’m a manager now. So I have to be mature and show leadership traits, which is not so very characteristic of me. My plan is to do what needs to be done to get the work finished and to make my people grow in their abilities and make them look good for the owner. When they look good, then I look good. Everyone wins. :)
The drive to work is very long, so I need books on tape or a language program or something.
Can I bitch about the old job? Yeah, it sucked. It sucked working on commission. It sucked working for whom I worked for. It sucked working for people that showed preferential treatment for people of their same religion or who wore short skirts and low-cut blouses. My legs weren’t good enough and I didn’t swear over the right holy book. I’m very thankful to be out of there and be away from all that, but mostly because I wasn’t happy sitting behind a desk and typing all day. Its not for me. I need to make something and see the physical results of my work, rather than electronic data stored at the patent office.
I’ve been running a bit. Trying to get in my three miles a day (30 minutes), although I missed all last week. I put in 6 miles last weekend and last night I sped up the pace to get the rust worked out. Tonight I didn’t have time to run, so I mowed the lawn instead. Usually I use the power-drive on the mower but this time I didn’t, and just pushed the big pig mower by hand. Good sweat for 30 minutes.
I have a 5K in a couple weeks, then another in July after the Boilermaker. This year I am NOT doing a fall marathon because I am doing the 20K in New Haven and don’t want to kill myself in training.
Oh, and hopefully this week I will have my first give-away! Well, there’s stipulations and provisos of course. TANSTAFL. (know what that means?) :)

It means There’s No Such Thing As A Free Lunch and it was coined by Heinlein, not by some Stanford economist who used it liberally.
Congrats on getting a new job - yay!

Google threw-up, I mean out: There Ain’t No Such Thing As A Free Lunch
It sounds like your new job will be very satisfying. Sorry to hear that you have to be mature and show leadership traits, hopefully it won’t be so bad ;-)

Congrats on the new job. The old place wouldn’t like me because when I swear it’s far from the holy book. My breasts might have fit in there though.

Glad you like the new place and that you’re getting your run on again. Too bad you won’t have a fall marathon on the schedule.

Best of luck in the new job!
Try some podcasts on your drive. e.g. This American Life is only once a week, but fantastic.

very few things sucketh more than a job that steals your soul. congrats on getting out and hitting the road more consistently. you’re going to love how things start to be less tiring now that you don’t hate what you do and where you are 8+ hours a day. don’t ask me how I know…

show a little leg and cleavage? Where do i sign up for that?
it’s obvious you are in a MUCH better place–whoo hooo!
i just read an article about how when people work for a manager who makes them laugh, they perform much better.
which means the people under me should be standouts…
welcome to the wonderful world of management!
