They’re after me!

The cops were here tonight.

Someone reported me for a hit and run.  They said I rear-ended them tonight on one of the roads I take every day.

The cops looked at my truck and noted that it was damaged.  I told them it was old and I had damaged it in 2000 (our new insurance company took pictures last year which I’m hoping they still have on file).

Cop 1: Did you have any trouble on the road?  Anybody give you the finger?

Me: WHAT?  No!

Cop 2: Those icicles on the front of your truck would probably have broken off if you had rear-ended someone.

Cop 1: That damage does look old.  And your wreath would have been damaged too.

Me: Heh. Yeah.

They apologized for bothering me and went their merry way.

I don’t think this is the end of it.  Someone obviously saw my truck tonight.  I was on that road tonight.  There are too many people out there who need money right now and are looking for ways to make it.  I know this happened to someone I used to work with and they went to court and LOST!  The judge didn’t believe them and they lost their license for 6 months.

I may need a lawyer.

Gosh Jon, did you break a mirror or something? You didn’t need this. It does smell like someone trying to make a buck, maybe you look easy.

That’s just awful! Some people have no moral values when it comes to things like this. Then again, some people are always looking for a way to make a quick buck…

I hope this is the end of it.

What you need is the police report from the visit they paid you. Presumably it mentions that they inspected your truck and decided that it could not have been in a recent rear ender due to lack of damage to the wreath and the intact icicles. that way if someone tries to take you to court you have something to backstop that process.

Now I’m understanding the whole gun-rack thing in southern pickup trucks.
