My servings of pasta are usually roughly the size of my head. And I have a pretty big head for someone my size (my wife frequently reminds me that our kids take after me in that department).

Sorry to hear about the calf. It's always something, isn't it? Now that my knees and Achilles are finally ok, I've got an inexplicable blister at the back of my heel that I can't get rid of because the bandaids always come off. Aaaack.

I think it's all about the fun and excitement of being in the same place with a massive group of people who are all excited about the same thing you are. Our grocery store had signs about having the book at midnight, too - so we grabbed a few Harry Potter cupcakes and headed over to the big bookstore where 1,600 people were!! It just wouldn't be the same hanging at Kroger til midnight!!

Hope your calf feels better. Are your shoes worn out? I think I figured out why I don't lose weight while training for a marathon - too much pasta!
