Groundhog Day
I went out for a long run today. I was out by 9 am but it was hot already, I wish I had been out by 8. I was targeting about 12, no hills just smooth flatness. I was feeling reasonably well but a little hot and I could feel my form lagging. I stop by the truck and grabbed a quick drink. And about a mile and half later, I pulled that same calf muscle again. Right at 8.5 miles, about where I was in the Boilermaker when it happened. Déjà vu anyone?
So I’m icing and compressing and resting and elevating. RICE. Looks like I’ll be crosstraining for a while yet. I find this very disappointing.
I donated blood on Wednesday (hit the 13 gallon mark!) and so I skipped working out that night. I’m always torn as to whether or not to workout Friday night because the very next morning I go running, and usually its the long run. Yet I hate to miss workouts.
Thurday’s run was incredibly humid. The horseflies were horrendous but I saw 32 rabbits. This time many of them were very tiny. Today I saw only about 4. And by the way, when you are walking, the horseflies have a field day.
By the way, regular spaghetti has about 200 calories in a serving. Do you know how small a serving is for spaghetti? Two ounces. That’s a bunch of dry spaghetti about as big around as your thumb (~5/8 inches), unless you have really small or really large thumbs. When I think back to the GIANT plates of spaghetti I would normally eat at dinner, I’d say I would eat no less than 1000 calories worth of spaghetti. Hmmm.
EDIT:
Oh yeah, and while I was grocery shopping last night I picked a copy of Harry Potter while I was waiting in line. I know its a bit of splurge to buy a book I’ll only read once, but I have all the others so why not hold the set? I had to chuckle at all the goofy people standing in line at MIDNIGHT to get a copy. The clerk told me one guy was at the store since 9 pm waiting. At the grocery store! Good grief, people. I slept in, went for my run, went to church, did my shopping, and still got a copy just like them only I’m not bleary-eyed from staying up all night so that I would be the first to read it and talk about it. Silly people. Now admittedly, some young 20-somethings have no problem with staying up late because that’s what they do on Friday night anyway, and its a very good excuse to party. But you older folks? Need your sleep, stop being ridiculous.

My bowl of pasta looks like a serving platter! I read I should eat a cup of pasta … seriously … it looks like nothing … I need to use a side plate.
Hope the calf feels better.

Horseflies are slow creatures! Good thing eh?

I hear you about the pasta. I actually started weighing out my dry pasta awhile back to avoid overdoing, and I find that 2 oz of pasta is actually plenty.
I’m sorry about your calf, I was hoping it was on the mend. What sneaks were you wearing?

I get a nickel for every time I use the word ‘pasta’ in a sentence.

hi…i tried to comment but blogger had no comment love for me!! anyway, what i was trying to say was sorry about the leg. that used to happen to me all the time until a massage person taught me some new calve stretching exercises (for when i wasn’t injured). it was a preventative thing. she said most people only stretch one of the calf muscles so this other exercise she was teaching me stretched both. anywhoo…
feel better toots!
(and the only book i’ve slept outside for was Lance’s, and that’s b/c it came along w/ meeting him and getting his signature…)

Hope your calf feels better. Are your shoes worn out? I think I figured out why I don’t lose weight while training for a marathon - too much pasta!
July 23rd, 2007 13:53
Yuck - I hate pulled muscles and even worse is cross-training! I hope it gets better soon!

I think it’s all about the fun and excitement of being in the same place with a massive group of people who are all excited about the same thing you are. Our grocery store had signs about having the book at midnight, too - so we grabbed a few Harry Potter cupcakes and headed over to the big bookstore where 1,600 people were!! It just wouldn’t be the same hanging at Kroger til midnight!!

a quick glance at your post and I thought it said something about the rabbits multiplying by the end of your run :)

Sorry to hear about the calf. It’s always something, isn’t it? Now that my knees and Achilles are finally ok, I’ve got an inexplicable blister at the back of my heel that I can’t get rid of because the bandaids always come off. Aaaack.

um are you mocking the Harry Potter people? because…that’s what it sounds like…I’m sure you repent though

13 gallon mark! You are my hero!

My servings of pasta are usually roughly the size of my head. And I have a pretty big head for someone my size (my wife frequently reminds me that our kids take after me in that department).
