Charlton Heritage 5K Results: The rabbit died
Apparently the rabbits were not a good omen.
That was probably my most miserable race ever. Not only am I thoroughly out of shape, but the course was a nightmare. The first half is uphill. I thought I was going to die. I did ZERO training on hills/incline/angles/slopes/or combinations thereof. To make it more fun, the race was at 10 am. Who has a race a 10 am? WTF? By 10 am it was 80F, humid and sunny. I was sweating before I even got my number.
Fat, slow, and hard course. I totally sucked. My second worst time ever. I was faster when I had pneumonia. I was slower only in my first 5K. Some 8 year old girl passed me at the turn around and said “Nice job.” Thanks, kid. Please start sweating before I have to punch you.
This was a very small local race and everyone was very nice. A local high school kid did the national anthem on his trumpet. Local cops blocked the roads. Bagpipes at the turn around. Nice atmosphere.
The goody bag had real goodies like candy and sunglasses and a gift card for a Stewarts ice cream cone. The shirt had a nice design but it was fluorescent yellow-green. Looks like my wife just got another race shirt.
Snacks? Orange slices, gatorade, water, bagels. Sigh. I drank my fill and headed home. Since its only a few miles away it was fine with me. Now I have to shower and go mow the lawn and pretend none of this ever happened.

I know you’re discouraged by where you are compared to where you’ve been in the past, but consider that you are so far ahead of where you might be if you just chucked it all.
Finishing slow is better than DFL, which is better than DNF, which is better than DNS, which is heads and shoulders above didn’t even try.

I’m sorry Jon, it sounds dispiriting. I hope you will not lament it too much and set your mind to better races to come.

Jon, you are still faster than I am even if you had pneumonia, shin splints, heat stroke………….! My 10 year old cousin, whose legs are way shorter than mine can do a 3 K in 23 minutes. Youth will do that for ya!

Yeah those late runs can be a killer one run in our area starts at 11am.?!?!? I have no idea.
Way to run a race, I’m going through an I’m to chicken to sign up and see if I’ll be last period.
But I ran today. Woot. Hurray for us
And this dead blog thing…it’s hilarious. How are you doing your research?

You are to f’n funny! I agree who the heck has a race at 10 am. I ran this morning before 8 and was covered in sweat in 30 min. Ditto on the fluorescent shirt. I just got a green one for the last race I did. What is this 1980?

Listen up, buster - thou shalt NOT trash thyself any more - EVAH! You got up, you showed up and you ran to the finish line. You have to give yourself credit for that. As for the performance, when we don’t perform up to our own standards we just train some more and try again - WITHOUT the self flagellation.
Get it?
Got it!
GOOD!

listen up buster…wait..someone tried that approach already.
here’s my itty bitty contribution. This WAS your first 5k. At least, that’s how i’m going to think about my next race. If I think about it any other way, i might cry.
Here’s to starting over.
:)

Big Jon - it’s perspective. You’re not a runner who happens to have a wife, son, house, job, etc. You’re a husband, father, homeowner, etc. who runs. It sounds like there are other priorities at this stage and the heavy duty competition may need to be on ‘pause’ for a while. For whatever that’s worth …

I hate when little kids pass me.

Don’t be so hard on yourself. I know if I were to get discouraged every time I ran a slower race I would have quit the first year - I’ve learned to just enjoy being out there, even if they take away the finish before I’m done :-)

i had to read that bit about the race t-shirt out loud to smsmh. gave us a good giggle. don’t beat yourself up over the results. at least you got out there and got it done!

On the other hand, this practically guarantees your next race will be better. I’m sorry it wasn’t what you’d hoped.
June 3rd, 2007 16:36
Damn. Not even a cookie or brownie? That sucks. I like pretending too - gets me through the day.
June 3rd, 2007 22:08
Goody bag, snacks and race accoutrements made it a good day. Too bad you had to run too.
June 4th, 2007 11:23
you’re still in the game though.

Oh well a so called bad race will make the next one seem so awesome. Chin up and keep running Jon.
