The crockpot

I do alot of the cooking at home and spend a fair amount of time picking up stuff for dinner.  We eat alot of chicken, partially because its a nice lean meat and partially because its cheap.  If steak is cheap (like chicken), I’ll buy it.  Usually it isn’t.

The other night I came across steak on sale.  Buy one, get one free.  The price averaged out to $1.79/pound.  Such a bargain, especially since chicken breasts are at least that much.  So I bought four of them (two were free).  Then when I got home I put two in the freezer and decided to cook two of them.  The only problem was that these were not just regular steaks, they were London Broils.  Which apparently do not grill well without marinade.  We don’t do marinade.  We barely do gravy.  I can’t cook a regular steak, much less a marinaded steak.
So, I decided to try them in the crockpot.  I cut up 5 medium potatoes, 5 big carrots, and 2 spanish onions and threw them in the pot.  Then I cut up the two london broils into chunks and put them on top of the veggies.  I added a couple (three?) cups of water.  I’m not sure how much, I just kinda poured it in there from the Brita pitcher.  A little salt on top.  Cover it up, and set on low for 12 hours.

12 hours may have been too long for most folks but I really liked how it came out.  So much so that I bought a whole ton more of those marinade-requiring london broils and I’m making crockpot beef stew stuff alot lately.  Since the price of the “stewing beef” was $3.99/lb, I think this was an excellent deal.  I think I just found something easy to make for dinner.  I can whip it together in 15 minutes in the morning before work and have beef stew by the time I get home.  I’m liking it.

Love the crockpot beef stew. Dunno why, but winter up north makes crockpot food phenomenal - lots of heat, nutritionally dense, yummy yummy.

I used to make a mean beef stew. Toss in about a cup of catsup, a few dashes of Worcestershire and a pinch of Dijon mustard. That will make it really tasty.
