the moment

You know that moment in training, usually on the really long run, when you start having that thought? The what-the-hell-am-I-doing thought?

I’m having ones of those. Right. Now.

Somebody please tell me that I’m not making a HUGE colossal mistake. Please.

And then you can take away the 600 calorie Lindt Madagascar 65% cocoa bar so I don’t eat another one.

are you nauseaus?!?!?!?! that’s what life decisions do to me. i second guess the big decisions until the moment i can’t back out (nauseau until i tell my boss i am quitting-once it’s over with i feel better). you just have to move forward. the fact that you are torn about what to do only means you built a good, valuable, meaningful life in michigan that is hard to leave. which is a great thing to have done. it’s a better feeling than having to flee to New York b/c nothing in michigan is right.

Hmmm, let the expert life-changer calm you down. It’s all good. Look at me! Everything will work out. (I don’t mean to minimize what you are going through. But you will be fine because you will make the best of whatever it is.)

You need something to preoccupy your wandering mind. Start planning your move and what you’ll do when you get there. Make lists. Cross things off one at a time and feel accomplishment.

Just remember - there’s a reason you got this far in the decision. As much as you may get second thoughts and cold feet, there was obviously enough of a reason for you to consider this move and decide to do it to begin with. The change of scenery for running is a good enough reason by itself, right? ;-)

Hey Jon - I’ve been out of the loop for a while but I see you’re making a pretty big ‘life’ move. What’s to say brother - of course you’re going to be a bit anxious about it all until all of the practical aspects require your full attention, e.g. moving boxes, buying houses, etc. You’ll settle in and do beautifully mi amigo - that’s just what you do.

Remember Kennedy’s observation:Written in Chinese, the word crisis, is composed of two characters. One represents danger and the other represent opportunity.

Inherent in all change is the element of uncertainty, but that is what makes it beautiful, because ANY thing can happen, even good things!

Hang in there — I know I say that a lot and you always do :-D

On the Penguin lists, when someone has just about had it with the long runs and they’re flipping out about the race, we say “Trust your training”. You did the thinking on this, Jon. You searched your soul, weighed your present life against your potential one, and decided. You’re a solid guy who will do well no matter what, ’cause your best is amazing, eh?

    Now, give me that chocolate.

It sounds like you’re doing the right thing. Big life changes such as moving and switching jobs always trigger some (or a lot) of anxiety. That’s normal. You’ll be busy for the next few months getting situated, but I bet you’ll be happier as a result.

Change is scary but it is almost always good. You must have had some call to action or you wouldn’t be doing it. Besides, you’ll be closer to your family and that’s always a good thing.

Eat the chocolate, take a deep breath, calm down, go for a run. You’ll be fine!
