Good job. Three percent is a steep hill; I'm feeling pretty cocky if I run at 2%. You deserve some chocolate. :-)

You are so my long-lost twin brother! chocolate addiction, loves country music, can ran 15-20 miles during the week with one long run of the weekend without breaking, love of firearms ;)! Are you about 5'7" and weigh about 140lbs too?

I do find that it's easier to keep at it if I make a commitment to actually participate in a race. Stick with it!

What about finding a series of races to train for/through? Is there a local running club with an informal Grand Prix? I found just having a goal of completing x amount of inexpensive races in a club series was great for helping me keep my training consistent. Over several years of repeating the same series, I've changed the goals to involve (x number of races under such&such time, x number of series races in a row, etc.)

want to hear the good news about being out of shape? your body is less efficient so the workout "does more for you" as far as calories burn and progress. it's the law of diminishing returns and you're on the high end of return. that's kind of cool. that's why people who just start an exercise program drop weight righ away.

however, i'm CONFIDENT you'll be in shape VERY soon.

Look for a good trail race somewhere, this might be easier on your shins and perhaps a breath of fresh air in your running.

Phew! Now I don't have to worry about you any more.

You could pick a run and just pick a less lofty goal time than usual. Or you could pick a series of 3 runs with a goal of improving your time on each one. Or you could just pick a goal of never again having to go through what you just went through on that treadmill. That's no fun at all.
