Rest day!

Today was a rest day, and a company holiday in celebration of Dr. Martin’s birthday. Well, the holiday was for him, the rest day was for me. :)

I had an hour of crosstraining at the gym yesterday and pushing it hard. I noticed on the bike that I get tired before my heart rate gets high enough, so I really had to concentrate on the riding and couldn’t watch much TV.

There’s tons of new people at the gym. New Year’s folks. I wish people would stick with it all year, we’d all be alot healthier if they did. But they don’t. About 90% of them will give up by Easter and we won’t see them back until Thanksgiving.

My dentist goes to my gym. I see her there once in a while when her class coincides with my workout. She’s working hard. I heard she had gotten a divorce which really sucks because she’s very nice, and being a single parent (worse, a divorce single parent) is dreadfully difficult. We’ve been seeing her now for over 10 years. She had her first baby when we first got her.

I spent most of today cleaning the basement and working on the furnace and hot water heater. I had to drain the heater to clean out the hard water mineral deposits so it wouldn’t knock, and would heat up faster. The furnace had a leak in the manifold where the water collects. Some screws had rusted out, so I had to dig out some stainless steel ones to replace them with.

My son and I went through a huge pile of his toys and he threw out a full garbage bag of trash (6 pounds) and a HUGE box of toys that will go to the rummage sale (15 pounds). I was very impressed because this was all his idea. He got to watch Robots again as his reward.

Oh, and in all that digging, I found a box with all the poetry and music I wrote in college. I had been looking for it and wondered what had happened to it. There was a portion of a piano piece I had written for my wife in there. It was a really complicated score, across three 4 octives I think. Playing the melody (because I can’t play piano anymore) I began to recognize it. It was only the beginning portion. I think I gave up writing it because it was really involved and it was easier to play it from memory. It starts in G# and moves to somthing else after this “bridge” part. All I have is the beginning. I need to spend some time with it and maybe it will come back to me (ugh, 19 years later).

I bought some blind robbins at the store. If you don’t know what they are, they are smoked herring with enough salt to kill a goat. There’s about 50,000,000 mg of salt in half a herring. Its kinda like herring flavored salt. But oh so good. My son really, really wanted to try some. I gave hima little tiny piece. He said it tasted like rotten spoiled beef jerky. I’d say that’s a pretty accurate description. :)

Tomorrow is another 3 miles. Easy run at the gym again. My abs are feeling better after tearing them apart on the Captain’s Chair, so I can resume that again. I found I have very little energy for it after running or doing cardio work, so I need to do that first.

Right now I am melting the new couverture. I remember now what a pain it was to use faves instead of the blocks. Those little discs work their way up the side of the bowl and up over the edge. You have to add them a little at a time. I wish I had the blocks. I added a little bit of cocoa butter to thin it all out. I made centers earlier and so I’ll do some truffle dipping tonight before bed.

I signed up for Around the Bay tonight. Warren mentioned he had signed up so I figured that was my hint to get moving and commit. I’m going. I knew I was going but now I have to go. I will go and race and have fun. And meet cool blogger people.

And good grief the online fees are more expensive in Canada. $3! Now, I know its normally $3 Canadian, but the form automatically converts it to US dollars and leaves the amount the same. Geeez. That’s it. I’m stealing the soap from the Canadian hotel and I’m taking extra snacks to make up for it.

Okay, okay. I know I read something about a race later in the post … but I stopped in awe at the “Jon is a songwriter” portion. WOW! Decluttering, chocolate, running, and now songwriting … I think I may have a crush.

    :)

When I read your title without glasses, I read “Best Day”…and I thought, “Great, Jon had a wonderful day.” But even though I mis-read it, you DID have a great day. You and David T from Florida should talk poetry sometime:)

what is my problem!? All this time I’ve been unemployed, and I’d forgotten that they gym has CLASSES! (tho’ I won’t see MY dentist there). Sheesh. I have no excuse to skip pilates anymore.

    It’s happening. I’m becoming a sloth. *sigh*

You’re doing such a great job of cleaning up your old ’stuff’ and it looks like you motivated your son, too! Way to go!!!

Congrats on signing up for the race! I’ve gotten so cheap on the online sign ups I try to find an old snail mail form, if I can!

Please don’t steal our beloved soaps. Or we will send beavers after you.

I am interested on doing ATB. But it is too hard on the body to train that and IM at the same time. I told Will (roadrambling.blogspot.com) i will run the last 15 km with him. Hopefully i will see you there as well.
