How did I do in 2005?
I wanted to review how I did for the year and see where I need to improve for 2006 (has it been a year already?)
1. Less whining - I whine alot. About my job. About my running. About aches and pains and anything that annoys me. Sometimes its funny and makes a funny blog entry, but it gets tiring. And annoying. And stupid. So less whining.
Totally blew this one. The whining hit an all-time high unfortunately. Its in my nature and its going to take more than one year to curb this bad habit.
2. More work, less surfing - Especially at work. More work will be better for my career, less surfing will help me do more work.
I refuse to answer on the grounds it may incriminate me.
3. Run a marathon - I ran two halves last year. This year I want to run a full one. I?m hoping that the less whining will help.
Done! And I still was able to whine anyway. :)
4. Lose the belly flab - I don?t think I?m fat, but I?ve got handles where I don?t need to be lifted from, and there?s a heavy protective pad over my abs as well. I?m willing to risk having the abs get damaged if it means removing that pad.
Yes and no. I lost those handles early on (it was so nice) and then I grew them again. Net result is zero. Try again.
5. More core workouts - Chris does alot of this and I think that will help me build better overall strength, which in turn will help with my running.
Nope. Didn’t do any. None at all. This is something that needs to be a top priority for me in terms of health and fitness in 2006.
6. The Patent Bar - I want to study for and pass the Patent Bar Exam. Ultimately, I want to get into patent law. I don?t think I want to be a lawyer, but maybe a patent agent. So there it is.
Done! Slam dunked that baby. So happy to have it behind me. :)
7. Stop eating poison - I try to keep myself away from rotten foods like fried chicken, spare ribs, doughnuts, etc. But sometimes french fries, whole fat cheese, and junk candy have slipped in. More than it should. I need to remember the heart disease history in my family everytime I think about putting something like that into my body.
I think I did OK in this area. The fried foods were nearly non-existent, but the candy was way overboard. I will resolve to work harder at keeping away from the candy.
8. Empty my house - My house is so full of junk, I think I want to die. Nobody?s basement should be this full. I still have boxes of stuff with the moving company stickers on them from when I moved here 12 years ago. I need to sell the scuba gear because I?m not diving this year. Or the next. I must be strong and not give in to the maybe-I?ll-need-it-soon mentality of the packrat that has infested my brain.
A big zero here. I started organizing it all early on, but it fell apart. The pile of scuba gear for Ebay is still sitting in a heap by the desk here. I will put this on Ebay in January. Promise.
9. Clean my truck - I think the dirt in the truck is so thick in the carpets that its making me sick. A good vacuuming once a month would probably do wonders. Ok, this isn?t a big one but its important anyway.
I know I vacuumed the truck at least once last year, and I never left banana peels on the floor for longer than 24 hours.
10. More time with the family - If I spent less time whining and surfing, I?d be able to spend more time with my family. Not that I?ll stop blogging or visiting blogs, but needlessly surfing odd topics looking for something entertaining is really not very constructive. Not every day. Its probably no better than channel surfing. I don?t have a TV, but is surfing the web much different?
Blew it again. I spent more time on the web than ever before. Discovered Blogshares and wasted away even more time. This again adds to the love-handles because sometimes snacking is involved while surfing. :(
11. Chocolate Friday - Remember to do Chocolate Friday before Friday. :)
Gack. How many times can we count that I blew it for Chocolate Friday? A bazillion. I may need to rename this Hardly-Anything-To-Do-With-Chocolate Runner’s Blog.
The most important thing I found in my goals list was this line:
When I?m making a decision to do something, I can look at my list and ask myself if it falls within the guidelines and whether or not it will help me reach my goals, will I regret doing it when December 2005 rolls around.
So here is it December 2005 and now I regret the bad decisions. The no-good-for-me food, the excessive food, the days that I could have worked out but didn’t, the time I spent looking at web sites about nothing, the chances I missed to read good blogs, the time I didn’t spend with family, and all the stuff that needs doing around my house that didn’t get done. I do regret those bad decisions. Maybe that will sting enough to stay in my memory all next year. A little pain sometimes helps you learn from a mistake.
Goals for 2006 coming soon.

Ha! Funny. I was just reading about goal setting & experts suggest that you should write your goals down in the form of positive affirmations which are PERSONAL (I am so happy and proud that I no longer whine); in the PRESENT TENSE, as if you’ve already achieved the goal (My core training has given me clearly defined abs); and state POSITIVELY, since your subconscious moves towards what you think (My home and truck are clean and well organized). Then, it’s suggessted that you VISUALIZE your desired outcome. I’m willing to give it a try! Good luck with the 2006 list!

Hey Jon,
Thanks for your public goal setting post. While I read your post, I realized that we have a lot in common ;). On the plus side, look back at the last year and pick out the area you haven’t backslid on. I sort of think of my life as being like that bop-a-mole game that used to be popular at the fair, where you’d bop the moles with a padded hammer as they poked their heads up. There was some limit where the game would shut off it a certain number of moles were up at a given time. Keep bopping my friend.
If the net sum for this year is that you advanced your career goals, you lost some fat, gained it back, continued to drive your truck to work, and still have your family healthy and sound, I’d say its been a pretty good year.
And the whining thing, Ehh, keep whining to the blogosphere if you want to. If we want to read it, we will, if not, we’ll just skip it, no worries.

Hey, you hit some and you’re still working on some.I think most of us will find our lists similarly “undone.” (But you should feel a real sense of accomplishment for those marked “yes”.)For the rest, there’s always this year.

Jon,
I think you did pretty good on your goals! Keep up the good work.
(thanks for sticking up for me on blogshares!@!@!)

Hi Jon,
I spent far too much time sitting staring at my computer screen rather than cleaning my car or house as well this year. I love this time of year, it’s like you get a do-over like when you were a kid.

If only whining and surfing helped me run faster and further … I’d be a superfast gazelle like runner by now!
You did great with your 2005 goals, what’s in store for 06?
December 27th, 2005 12:39

LOL what a brilliant post, I would say all up - you did tremendously.
Looking forward to the 2006 Goals and thought I should at least ask if it’s okay that I steal this idea from you?

OMG! You suck so badly!
December 28th, 2005 17:43
You done good, kid. Please, please keep up the whining (and really you don’t do that much whining…(Really, it’s cuz I don’t want to have to cut down on whining. I mean, if I did that, what’s left to blog about???) Damn straight on the patent bar exam! WHOO HEE! And the Marathon: Double WHOO-HEE!

Hey! I think you’ve had a GREAT year! If you accomplished every single goal to a T you would have an enormous head and then have to write a goal the following year about that. I love #2 & #8. #8 is going to be a BIG one for me next year.
I can’t wait to see how well you do in all your goals next year! Keep up the great blogging!
