Break time!

I’m feeling better physically today. Some stiffness in the backs of my legs (top of the calf, bottom of the whatever-the-back-of-your-thigh-is-called), and my quads are a bit sore. I can walk normal again and that’s what is important in public. :)

Thank you to everyone for the congrats on the race. I still feel very odd about it all. Finished, yes, but it was so hard and painful and not at all how I planned it to be. I expect it to be a little while before I feel good about it in a large way. I’m going to frame my medal, bib, and flyer from the race I think. Maybe that will help. I usually like to just keep the finisher’s medals out and accessable so I can hold them (yes, and wear them too) when I feel down, but this one should go on the wall I think.

So what’s next? I had a whole list of races written out already but I need to take a brief break from running. I need to fix my form in a major way and spend time building up muscle imbalances so that my form will hold well. Karen’s house of pain may help that. All the races will be after the new year anyway, I think, although there are fun runs near Christmas which I may go to just because they are done by the Ann Arbor Track Club and I like their events.

Also, I have a MAJOR exam coming up in 3 weeks. Did I mention the Patent Bar? Nothing like having too many irons in the fire. I’m studying for that and need to devote nearly all my time to it. Kinda like training for a marathon except my brain hurts instead of my legs. I suspect I will still need to go to the gym and workout to stop the bloat and to relieve some of the stress.

Given all that, the posting and comments on blogs may be light for a few weeks until I can get that behind me. I love reading the blogs and commenting and stuff so it will be really hard to stay away. Its important that I do though or I will have wasted an opportunity to better myself. It would be like watching movies instead of doing my long runs.

I completely understand. I really should stay away from the blogs while studying for the CPA exam. But they are addictive! Good luck on your test!

Sounds like an excellent plan. Rest, get better, fix the problems, and then you’ll be able to come back and kick serious butt next year.

Good luck on the patent bar!

    Jon-
I “ran” across the blog on accident and happen to be a neighbor (A2). Although we’ve never met, you’ve been an inspiration and turned me onto some cool places (for instance County Farms! Great trails. DSO and I are addicted when the weather and lighing permit). Way to go with the marathon. You earned your finish in a huge way. Best of luck with the patent bar. I’ve taken state bars twice and those are easy when compared. I’m sure you will succeed at that in the manner you have succeeded at running. Maybe I’ll see you out at a race.

    All best,
    MNW

Jon, I hope you can come to feel tremendous pride in your accomplishment…because you SHOULD. Really.

And welcome to the “fixing our form” club. :)

Good luck with your exam! Doing pushups, situps and jumping jacks every half-hour always helped me stay concentrated studying for exams. I would suggest running in place, but you might hit me ;-)

Jon, let me add my congratulations! As a famous person said, “I feel your pain”. Welcome to the club. These are some stiff dues we pay. But, say it, “I am a marathoner!”. Sounds good, right? Way to go.

Patent Bar? Is that some sort of chocolate coated protein bar? I think Snickers makes one like that.
I am beginning to think core workouts/cross training are as vital as the miles and long runs when it comes to marathons. What do you think?

Good luck on your exam! It sounds like a great break from running and an excellent reason to buy a bag of Cheetos (my fave study food) and curl up on the couch and study. Have a great weekend!!

i am so glad someone else feels the same way (although i’m NOT so glad that its because you were injured!)…. nobody around my neck of the woods gets it…they’re like “why aren’t you excited” blah blah.. i just can’t explain it, but… i dunno. like you, i think it’ll take me a while.. maybe once my knee isn’t hurting anymore.

anyway, congrats on making it thru that. for me, the most impressive thing is having the ability to perserver throughout the pain… i really dont know many people that could or would do that.

and much luck on that exam!
