I deserve it today.

For the first time in ages, I actually did my crosstraining on Sunday. One hour of good sweating on the machines at the gym (but I always wipe them down afterwards).

Everyone and their brother was there yesterday, and for once I didn’t mind. Somehow it was nice to be back inside with everyone working hard to get back into shape. No holidays coming up and everyone is still working at it. Makes me smile to think that maybe some folks are truly interested in their health.

Even the Nike Brothers were there in all their Nike glory. I was going to strike up a conversation with them but the only time I had a good chance was when they were naked in the shower. Doesn’t work for me. “Hi! I’ve seen you around here. What’s your name? Nice tan.” See? Not so very good. I’ll wait for a better opportunity.

So today is rest day and for once I don’t feel like I snuck in an extra one by totally wimping out on a Sunday workout. My left heel is still a bit stiff and sore, but not so very bad. Not like the first time, and it doesn’t hurt after a run which would tell me I’m making it worse.

My son is doing ropemaking in Cubscouts this week, and since I’m helping out in the den, I get to make the rope maker. They are pretty easy to make, but can be frustrating if you don’t have good tools or are doing it from memory like I was (25 years ago I did this). It took about 5 hours to make the maker (with some swearing involved), and only 3 minutes to make the rope. My wife and I did the test run last night and made a quick little 4 foot section. I’ll post a pic if I can. I’m pretty proud of it even if its not such a super job. I think the kids will like it.

I noticed last night that my shoes were really messed up. I wore my old Mizuno’s as crosstraininers (one step down from running shoes) and I immediately noticed how crushed the heels were. The edges came up and kinda pinched my heels on the sides. I wouldn’t have noticed if I hadn’t been running now in the new shoes. I wonder if that contributed to my heel issues. Maybe I need to switch shoes before 250 miles from now on. Maybe 200 miles? Seems so early.

That’s about it today. Oh yeah, and I gained 10 pounds this week. Not sure how it happened but I think it was the giant pile of chocolate and candy I eat every day. Do ya think it will affect my running?

I’m really bad about changing shoes too, and it always amazes me when I go back to an older pair. I will try to cycle them in and out of long runs though, with a cushioned pair starting on recovery runs, graduating to long runs, then going back town to recovery runs. At least, that’s the theory. That lest you switch earlier while still getting more value out of them. Oh, and I use a different pair for speedwork. It doesn’t cost any more to have 3-4 pairs at the same time (if you think about the fact that you get the same total miles/dollar), and they do last a lot longer that way - or at least they seem to.

I got myself a pair of Mizunos today. It was a toss up for a while if I should get shoes or forego two weeks worth of fuel for the truck, I think I’ll be riding the bus to work for a month.

Ropes! We’re a knot family (long line of sailors), where you are judged by the knot you tie:) Your comment about shoes makes me think about mine again. I’m heading to the running store tomorrow to check out the cho-pat–and maybe some new shoes–again. Thanks for the advice.

isn’t it kind of nice to be back in the gym when it’s been a while? i have noticed that myself a couple of times in the past few weeks. crazy the nike brothers are still going strong. i imagine the gym happiness feeling will disappear around february, but for now, it’s kind of nice. cheers.

now when you say “naked in the shower” do you mean that the nike “brothers” were naked TOGETHER in the shower? Were they lathering each other? Scrubbing each other’s back? Don’t drop the soap! ;)

10 pounds? Are you sure? Maybe being back in the gym is putting some serious muscle on you (or it’s the heaps of candy!) Hmmmm…sounds like a good day!
