Finally home
Now I am finally back from vacation. Now I really do need a vacation. Nothing like driving 37000 miles to relax for a couple days, only to drive back again. Bleh. At least I got to race with the very cool RBF folk. :)
So, I ran my 8 miles Wednesday (yes, Pam, I already said that). And I ran 4 the next day in my old neighborhood. It was wierd to run in big circles around the blocks and see the kids getting on the school buses for their first day of class, just like I did many moons ago. I ran past a house where I saw someone I knew in high school as he was loading his car by the road. He was a prick to me in school and was still a prick when I saw him a few years ago at the reunion. No need to spoil my run to stop and say “hi”.
Saturday I ran my 12 miles at Cape Cod. There’s a running/biking path that starts near Orleans and continues up to the end of the Cape, I think. I only needed 6 of it though. There was an MS Walk for the Cure going on so I had cheering crowds for my run, but I didn’t steal any snacks. We had really cool weather and there was plenty of shade on the path so I felt pretty good for the run. At about mile 8 I made a quick pit stop in a restroom that was stationed right on the side of the path. It wasn’t labeled with signs or anything but it looked just like an outhouse. I felt funny peeking inside at first, but the stench and presence of a toilet confirmed my suspicions. I think I ran right past it last year and didn’t even realize what it was.
Sunday I drove my truck to NY.
Monday I drove my truck to MI, arriving sometime after 1:00 AM. The only joy of that was finding my box from Deene containing a jar of homemade peach jam and a jar of homemade salsa. The bad news being that I forgot to bring it to work to enjoy it at lunch and will have to wait until after my run to have the salsa. But you know I’m having my peach jam before the run tonight. :) Thanks, Deene!
Today I feel like crap and I’m so sleepy I want to die. Just 4 today. Thank goodness. This weekend I have 18 miles coming up. I’m not sure where to run this. I’d like to run on the dirt roads and zap some dogs, but I think I may be running out of water.
Hope you all ar doing well. Its another hot one today. Drink your water.

I’m glad you are home Jon. You are to be commended for running in and around all that driving. Your legs must have ached. (No, that’s MY legs that ache when I drive!) Well, I officially commend you anyway!! Can’t wait to hear about the 18.

Hi Jon glad you had a safe trip. I would offer the suggestion that if your marathon will be on streets or hard surface you try to do a greater portion of your long runs on a similar surface. I ran almost entirely softer forest/field surfaces training for my first marathon and regretted it the whole 26.x miles as it was all city streets. This Sunday my second marathon will also be 100% city streets but this time I did at least 70% of my long runs on asphalt. I’ll let you know if it makes a difference!

Hey Jon, glad to have you back and congrats on all the New Haven and recent running. I was checking out Lara’s blog and it sounds like you all just a real blast. Enjoy the break in the heat and let me know how much fun you have with that new zapper of yours.

Isn’t it funny how we still feel about high school? Last week, twenty years after I left school, I crossed the street in Limerick to avoid a teacher I particularly loathed.

Glad to have you back! Sounds like the build to your race is coming along just fine. I’m looking forward to hearing about the 18 coming up. Hope it’s a good one.

Good luck - I’ve got a long one this weekend too.

hey jon, drive the course and drop some bottles along the run in the bushes. it really opens up the opportunities when you can find good places to stash stuff. and if it’s on a sunday morning, put the bottles in mailboxes. they’re not going to be opened until monday. =)
