7 miles and what a day!

I went out for my 7 mile run. At first I thought it was supposed to be on Saturday, then I looked at my schedule and it said Sunday, so I sat downstairs and leasurely read blogs until 11:00 because I was going to wait until later to do my crosstraining.

Then I looked at the schedule again and this one said Saturday. Why I had two schedules I don’t know. I think I was switching the days at one point. Tear up bad schedule, race to get dressed to go run before it gets so hot I want to die.

Lucky for me it was just incredibly nice outside. 72F, sunny, big fluffy clouds, and a little breeze. Just perfect for a run. Usually, the weather here is downright dreadful, especially on the weekend, but not yesterday (and not today for that matter). I worked very hard to hold the pace to my target range of 9:40-10:40. I think I caught myself going too fast sooner than I normally would have. Final pace 9:15, which is better than I expected.

I found that with a slower pace, I feel much better afterwards. Speedy stuff can be midweek, if I can keep the pace down for the long runs. When the mileage is higher, I’ll thank myself. No sore shins today. :)

Today I did my hour of cardio at the gym. Stairs, stepper, bike. Not so exciting, but I was reading a book I picked up at the bookstore in the clearance rack for $2.50. Its about a guy who has to lead a blind girl in a marathon. Its not so great but interesting enough to read. I don’t think the author was a runner because he doesn’t talk like one. Even so, I was surprised how fast the time went by while I was reading. When the stepper stopped on me, I thought it was broken. Oh yeah, 20 minutes is done. Next.

So tomorrow is rest day, but I’d like to get some weight lifting in. The gym may be closed so that may be out. There’s also a race in town I think, but my wife thought it might be nice for us all to spend the holiday together, rather than me spending it on the sofa, whining about my shins.

I took my son to Greefield Village in Dearborn today. We hadn’t been there in a couple years, and not since the renovation. Lots of nice changes, but kinda sad to see some of the place looking a little like touristy things and not so much like the museum/village. The glassblowing shop is huge now so you can see more, but I don’t think many village glass blowing shops were that big.

The Torch Lake steam engine was running and it was cool to ride that for the first time. It was just finishing renovation last time were there. A neat old steam engine. It seemed quieter than the Edison, which is the only other steam engine that I have ridden there, or anywhere for that matter.

Ofcourse, I had to get an icecream cone. Its one of those things that are hard to resist. It was a small, but I felt incredibly guilty standing in line. I’ll feel even more guilty standing in front of the mirror next time, watching the jiggle. Chocolate flavored, but not really chocolate. No chocolate till next thursday, but I’m not sure if it really helping to have icecream instead.

Hope you all had a good weekend.

i do not question you of all people Jon,but somebody commented to me today that when they go to a gym and see people reading the morning paper or a book while working out they suspect they’re not getting all they can out of the machine. Can you understand?

I had a hard time keeping my pace down on my long run this weekend, at least until I got over 15 miles, then I had trouble to keep the pace UP. Sounds like you did a good job with your pace, considering the distance you went. Keep it up! Have a nice holiday (I have to work)!

Greenfield Village rocks - went there as a kid, and remember being fascinated.

hey…i think i missed the idea behind chocolate friday…i thought that was the day you devoted your blog to chocolate-but is that also the only day you eat chocolate? i am curious b/c i am trying to decide the best way to cut junk food (and there is a lot of it) out of my diet to more sane levels. if that’s what you’re doing, is it working? (compliance and results wise?)

Hey, good work on maintaining a slow pace! ‘Tis hard, I know. But I have to agree - I feel better the next day - not beat-up. Re chocolate once a week: ARE YOU SERIOUS?! You’re not serious, right?

Happy Independence Day! (a few days late)

I always read whenever possible while working out - usually on a stepper or ellptical trainer or stationary bike. I think I get just as good a workout with the added benefit of a distraction to make the time go by faster.

Yeah, I totally did the childhood Greenfield Village thing too. In fact, I think I even did an overnight camping thing there. I was just reading about Fairlane last night, and the article offered secrets about the mansions, but I can’t even remember what the secret was about ole Hank and Fairlane. Oh, he really liked his powerplant at the River Rouge plant. Well, it was pretty cool. Does River Rouge even exist anymore, or has it been bulldozed for apartments?
