Wierd stuff from the store
I’m getting lamer and lamer on the Chocolate Friday posts. Next week will be cool, but this week is lame. Running out of time, I grabbed some things I saw at the store in the international aisle. Stuff I wanted to try but hadn’t done it yet.
OK, first up is not so strange, just a common one but I had to buy it because I needed some milk chocolate to keep in my desk. This is the Ritter Sport bar, milk chocolate version.
Yes, they do use vanillin (artificial vanilla flavor) and that’s damn gross. So does Hershey’s which makes it double gross. But lots of people like milk chocolate and I like to keep it in my desk to offer visitors. My friends refers to it as “beginner’s chocolate”. For folks that have not quite graduated to dark and extra dark varieties. Beginner’s chocolate. I like it. :)
The next one is the Milka milk chocolate bar. This is a Kraft Foods of Germany product. I liked that it is called a “milk chocolate confection” on the front.
If you aduterate chocolate enough, its no longer chocolate, but chocolate candy. There’s been a big stink in Europe about what you can call chocolate and what is not. I think now they can add some vegetable shortening and still call it chocolate. Yuck.
The Milka bar uses “artificial flavor” which probably means vanillin. This bar had a very bad taste. Almost rotten. I’m not sure what flavor they were going for but what they ended up with was bad. Seemed almost appropriate to have a cow on the label. Do not buy this chocolate.
The Nestle Chunky Milky bar was a total mistake. I was thinking milk chocolate, but it was WHITE chocolate. I hate white chocolate.
I laughed when I read “a delicious source of milk goodness” on the label. I will say they did have more milk powder than cocoa butter, and I was very happy to see cocoa butter on the list. But they also had “flavouring” which was probably vanillin again and that contributed to the dreadful after taste.
AH! This one is for Wil. She had asked me about Nutella and here it is in all its chocolate glory. Nutella is the ultimate dangerous chocolate spread. Hazelnuts and a bit of chocolate. Very yummy, tons of fat and calories though.
Great for dipping cookies in it. I love to dip Lorna Doone cookies in it, or Vanilla Wafers. And yes, I will eat it straight from the jar. It says not to refrigerate it, but if you do, you can scrape it will a spoon and eat it like Italian Ice. :D
This last one is Jon being stupid. I saw this on the shelf and read “Australian” instead of “Austrian”. Very disappointing.
They are wafer coated with chocolate and actually taste good at first, but the aftertaste (once again) was bitter and rotten. Made by Spitz? Yes, that about covered it.
So, not much to show for another Chocolate Friday. Try the Nutella. Skip the rest. Next week will be very good. Already got it planned. :)

My tastes for chocolate are like my running. Beginner leval. I prefer milk chocolate - dark is too strong for me. I used to love white chocolate but find lately it is too sweet. I have tried some that aren’t sweetened with sugar - those white chocolate varieties are better. I’m afraid to try the nutella for fear it would become addicting.

Ritter Sport, hands down, is my favorite brand of chocolate…but, then again, I haven’t branched out too far :-) When I was visiting Germany, I’d eat a bar or two a day!! My favorite was the Joghurt.
I love your Chocolate Friday posts…I just can’t find the chocolates you mention :-(

Nutella is YUMMY, I agree. We bring it camping and use it instead of regular chocolate on our s’mores. Beats waiting for the Jersey Milk to melt while your marshmallow gets cold.
… and nuts are GOOD for you, right? Roasted Hazelnuts are the BEST. I believe Bernard Callebaut makes a roasted hazelnut chocolate spread - hubby gave it to me once for Christmas - divine :)
I can’t wait for next week ;) !!!

Like peanut butter, nutella can be used for dipping. Thank you for this wonderful wonderful blog post featuring the food.

I love Nutella. I love it so much that it is not allowed in the house. Because I will eat all of it.
I don’t comment in your Chocolate Friday very much but I always enjoy reading them. Thanks!

I tried that Milka bar once- yuck. Nutella on Graham Crackers- pretty darn good. I’ve also seen people put it on those mini microwave pancakes.

I did this week in France thing in high school (my parents hoped it would squash my travellust–hahaha!), and I superoverloaded on chocolate. I particularly remember Milka as the 5th level of hell. Oh, and Nutella, I love Nutella. Though Karen’s mention of Callebaut’s spread sounds like something worth looking for!

Nutella?!!? Nutella?!?! I had completely forgotten about Nutella. When I was a kid and would sleep over at my cousins, we LIVED on the stuff. I never thought about it for Smores … good suggestion there. I wonder how small of a container one could buy!? :)
