Week Number 1

I had a crazy week of working offsite last week, and then we went to the wedding in Buffalo. Its normally about 5 hours going across Canada, but the ENTIRE city of Detroit is under construction. They route you on detours through construction sites. Its completely stupid. Thankyou Detroit for adding an hour onto my drive because the crooks in the road commission want to shut down every major road in the city to lock in their contracts until November. I hope they all get crabs.

The wedding was very nice. They held the ceremony in an old English gothic church downtown. I couldn’t believe my uncle made it down that long aisle after breaking his femur a few months back. He did ok. Maybe there will be morphine flowing at the house this week. :D

And I didn’t run. At all. I ate like a pig because the hotel had free breakfast every morning and I had a GIANT blueberry waffle with strawberries (in high fructose corn syrup) and (gack!) whipped cream on top! Not to mention all the Oberto beef jerky I ate while driving. And the popcorn flavored rice cakes. And the chocolate. And I ate the whole jar of Jolly Rancher candies at the hotel room. And birthday cake (guess who’s :) ). And wedding cake.

I did bring my running shoes and clothes, but they got stuck in my bag and I couldn’t pull them out.

My week of sloth is over now and today is Day 1 of marathon training. Rest Day! Yea! Heh, heh. Not really. Yes, its a rest day but I am going to do weights tonight instead of resting because I had too many rest days already anyway.

April Anne asked about the plan, and I will be following Hal Higdon’s 18 week Novice Plan:

Starts off easy enough, although those 20 and 18 milers farther down do look a bit intimidating. I’ve got my support team training right now on bikes to help with drinks and such when those big runs come up. If I can keep one of them on the path long enough that is…

Off to read all the blogs I’ve been missing.

Wow. That training plan doesn’t get you into the 20’s? Seems odd to me because of how you hit the wall in those upper miles. Wouldn’t a person need to kind of train through that?

I look forward to following your training - I’m sure it’ll be an adventure. We’ve been invited to a dizzy wedding this weekend as well - events that I don’t really care for.

DAY ONE!!!!!! HOW EXCITING!!! KICK SOME MARATHON BUTT!! And hey, i bet you didn’t have drunk food this weekend did you? So you don’t have to worry about that. That’s the fourth meal of the day that accompanies a late night of drinking…and i had to pay (b/c i was at IHOP and not a wedding) but i also had fabulous pancakes this weekend…

I look at your plan and thought, wow, piece of cake. But I was thinking KMs and realized that’s miles. Silly me :-)

Oh how exciting to be following your marathon training.
And you got your sloth week in early - great idea! LOL at your clothes and shoes being stuck in the bag!!
RYN: thanks Jon, I missed the ice bit in R.I.C.E but have been doing the rest of it.
I chose a great time to be injured. It is so wet and stormy here, I couldn’t run even if i wanted to.
My husband is off to Missouri this weekend. I am nervous but really excited for him.

We have good friends in St. Clair Shores, always take the ride from Upstate New York to Detroit through Canada. I think Detroit are always working on their roads! A nice rest before the start of marathon training is not a bad thing, you will pay for it in the upcoming months;-) I followed Hal’s plan more or less, much better than Gallloway’s run-a-little, walk-a-little. You’ll do fine!

It’s so exciting! Except for the long runs (the scary, scary long runs!) it looks a lot like the half training I did - it was higdon’s novice for that one, too, as I recall. I don’t think the training was ever more than 10 miles for the half, and his philosophy was, eh, race day will carry you through - if you can run 10, you can run 13 - that kind of attitude. I mean, he was right. Are you hoping for a particular time, or just getting one down?

Man, Detroit’s roads. Sigh. It’s not a visit to Detroit, or a drive through it, unless you sit for an hour watching them lay asphalt. Or drive through a construction zone, 25mph, singlefile, and see not a single worker.
I’m totally psyched about your marathon plan. You could do much worse than Higdon!!!!!

I see that you’ve got a 20 mile run three weeks before the race. Now, if I recall correctly, the Brooks/Hansons team doesn’t do any 20+ mile runs in the training program for a marathon–I think their longest is a 16 mile run. That doesn’t seem right to me–it seems like you’d need at least one 20 miler or more.

I used the same plan for my first ‘thon, and I finished, which was all I cared about. You’ll be fine. I’ve fine-tuned it some for my 2nd race, but it’s solid and will get you there.

I really like Hal HIgdon, for half marathons, but I hate that he the full marathon’s don’t ever get above twenty miles…I like to KNOW if I am going to die or not. Not that I have ever run a marathon…but I’ve looked at the schedule…

I used the same plan to train but I substituted a second cross training day for a lighter run day to keep the mileage down. I was really afraid of injury. Also, I sometimes added an intermediate recovery week between some of the weeks with long runs. It worked out well for me. The hard part is trying to stay on track when work, family demands, illness, etc. crop up.

    High Fruitose Corn Syrup, ha.
When I went to Canada after the wedding, one of my friends once worked in a factory that made HFCS and said for some reason, its more sticky in soda than in raw form.

I also picked up a 12-pack of Pepsi MADE WITH REAL SUGAR in Canada!
