a little exercise

I was still a bit sore on Monday and Tuesday. The quads were tired but the calves were damn sore. Not as bad as the Trail 1/2 but still sore. From the pictures of the race I can see that on the uphills I am either pushing off with my calves still, or at least balancing with my heels off the ground. Working the calves hard either way. Your calves are very small muscles and it asks alot to have them run your race for you. Quads are much better suited for it.

So Monday I headed back to the gym and did my upper body workout. Everything is still holding its own in that category. I left off the leg weight workout to give them another rest day.

And the good news? I did bench presses again for the first time in months. I had hurt my shoulder months back and I couldn’t do any of that. Monday I put 80 pounds on the machine and did a nice set of 15 reps. A little burning in the shoulder but no pain. I can even press down on the opposite shoulder now and it doesn’t hurt. I think this thing is finally turning around.

And the bad news? My bruised rib SCREAMS when I try to do sit ups. It hurt so bad it I just had to lie there taking little gasping breaths for a moment until it all subsided. Apparently, your abs pull on your ribs, and they don’t like to be twisted when they are injured. Probably why they hurt in the race, because I was using my abs a bit. Ok, so abs workouts are out for a little while. How long does it take a bruised rib to heal?

Yesterday I did 20 minutes on the stair climber and then a 10 minute barefoot run on the indoor track. I spent alot of time trying to work my form right and especially how my toes feel. I got that blister the last time and wanted to see if I could feel that toe pushing on the ground. Felt ok for now. Its hard to say how it will feel outside, but maybe I need to do a mile BF indoors as often as possible and maybe a shorter run outside before my main workout.

I’m also trying to get the psychotic eating under control again. I know that I reach for that chocolate when things get stressful. Trying to limit it to one day a week (Friday, heh heh). I gained a boatload of weight recently and its coming off again now, but I don’t want to just start piling it on again just because of dumb decisions.

That being said, my son’s cubscout pack went fishing last night and we had SMORES around the campfire. I had two. Ofcourse I had two because 1) I have no damn self control, and 2) they were there in front of me and I HAVE NO DAMN SELF CONTROL.

My son caught his first fish too. A small sunny (blue gill? not sure). He also caught a bigger bass, maybe 10 inches. He was pretty happy about it. He asked if we could keep them and I said no because Mommy hates fish and the lake is filled with mercury and dioxin.

One of the younger scouts was crying at one point because the fish he caught had died. Swallowed the hook and stuff. He hadn’t realized there was an inherent risk to this game. I felt bad for the little guy. We read them books and show them movies about animals with personalities that talk and are our friends, and then the big world comes in and points out that sometimes we do things that are not so “neighborly”. :(

Not sure what’s on the plan for tonight. I have no training plan. Just trying to get things working again. I’d like a short easy run because its humid and rainy and I’m tired and sleepy. And now I’m hungry and the clock says I’m allowed to eat so its time to go sit in my truck and listened to the radio and eat my lunch. Yea!

Ugh, s’mores are the devil for me. Dang it, Jon! Now I have it stuck in my head and will HAVE to make them tonight.

Ouch on the rib. I don’t know how long a bruised one takes but a friend of mine can tell you all about broken ones. She was kicked by a horse and had 2 broken ribs and a torn quad. She tried to play our softball game the day after it happened and needless to say, the twisting motion of batting was not good. She’s been out for over 6 weeks now. And is still in lots of pain.

I’d give it time to heal and then get back with the abs. Plus, with most exercises you can trick your body into using your abs as stabilizers, without them wanting to hurt your ribs.

It sounds like you are battling soreness on many levels. Take it easy as you begin your marathon training…I know you will. Eating good healthy food will help (I say this so my own brain kicks in gear and listens!)

For some reason, I read, “My son caught his first fish” as “My son caught fire”. I don’t know where that came from, but I’m so glad it’s not true!

And mmmmm, s’mores. If it wasn’t raining and bloody hot outside, I’d break out the fire pit and make some chocolatey, marshmallow goodness. Fat be damned! I need my s’mores!

RYN: LOL Jon it is not weird at all, I looked up your Dexter Ann Arbor Run just so I could see how gorgeous and “American” the scenery is.

I missed the chocolate cake post…your description was hilarious.

Hope the soreness is getting better, I noticed today that my calf is feeling much better - might be running again sooner than I think =)

Interesting…I have no idea how long bruised ribs hurt. The good news I think most of us would forgo sit-ups over running if one had to be given up :) Still sounds painful though…

You know that s’mores are better for you than exercise, right?

My chiropractor said 6 to 8 weeks for the pain to go away and maybe longer to heal I too have one or more bruised ribs from my car accident but they don’t mind my abs contracting, they hate it when I sneeze or cough hard though!

I don?t think I have had a SMORE since I was in brownies. Oh, how I wish I had a fireplace at my house!

Oh, damn that rib. Yikes. It might take a while to heal. And I know what you mean about self-control.
