Last long run

Today I did 11 miles on the trails, the last long run before the race. I was scheduled for 12 but since I did 13 last week, cutting off a mile seemed like a good idea. I did ok, but it was rough in a lot of spots.

My left shin still hurts and its hurting now behind my right knee. I was really tired near the end and I think I landed funny on the downhills and popped my knee backwards. It hurts when I straighten it hard (you know, like straighten it far enough that it bend backwards a little). I iced it for a while tonight.

Also, the bottom of my left foot hurt while I ran. It hurt under the ball, beneith the “the little piggy that had roast beef”. It felt like there was something in my shoe, like there was a knot under my toe. I thought was still sore from being smacked by a baseball while playing T-ball barefoot. But that was over a week ago. Hoping its not my newest chronic injury emerging. I’m not done with the last ones yet.

I shouldn’t be very surprised at all the aches and pains this week. I ran 29 miles this week, which is more than I’ve ever run in one week, breaking just last week’s record of 26 miles. Not very much to ALOT of people, but its alot for me. Usually when I pass 20, I start breaking down. And I’m already at 60 miles this month, which is pretty damn high for me as well. I know they say it ain’t the years, its the mileage. For me, its both.

So I’m feeling like I was run through an oatmeal machine. Tomorrow I get to enjoy another fun filled week of work. Tomorrow is rest day, by the way. No strength training this week. I’m too tired and too injured. And I may not run Tuesday either. Maybe I’ll just do some crosstraining. Tonight I think I’ve had enough of the intermediate program.

And the stupid dogs? Not a peep out of them last night. Not a sound from them today. Maybe my neighbor reads my blog. Maybe someone else called the cops and complained. I hope so. I hope they hauled the dogs away. Maybe they will haul the owners away too.

For those of you who don’t already know, Alison is running in the Boston Marathon tomorrow. Go over and give her a shout of encouragment. She runs like the wind too! I’ll be cheering for her online at the marathon website using her bib number, 4452. They will have times posted every 5K on race day.

You sound sort of burned out. I felt that way last wk. And i don’t even train as hard as you! So hope you get your needed rest this week and feel up to par soon. Kirsten

Maybe the *dogs* read your blog.

Watch those injuries - just reading about your times and mileage makes my lower back and left shin start to ache!

It’s so exciting that you’re winding down. Did you read what Running Chick had to say about her 10m trail run? Sounds HARD! And FUN! :) - Mia

Hey Jon - sounds like rest is really the most strategic and COMPETITIVE thing you can do right now - pusing it now might just push yourself into an injury! Glad to be back in the loop - I’m training in Australia at the moment, wait, I mean I’m working in Aus. at the moment but still find time to train :)

I think it was a good idea not finishing the last mile. We do have to listen to our bodies don’t we. Sometimes they tell us thing we don’t like to hear, like slow down, stop running etc. Get a couple good days of rest before your rest!

Fun. Don’t forget that this is fun. You’re a superhero and you know it. Just keep that in mind. Dig into this race, and push through. You’re a superhero!
