Lots going on

Lots of stuff going on and I just wanted to list it all here in bullets. Ofcourse, I don’t know how to do bullets. Dashes? Got it! Thanks, Dawn!

  • I had jury duty on Monday. Got through the first cut and made it to the courtroom but was never picked to go to “the box”.
  • Ran 5 miles Tuesday at the park while my son rode beside/behind/in front of me on his bike. Not too much stopping but he’s still working on the big hill.
  • Was up at 1:30 last night to fix the furnace exhaust blower that decided it had just about enough of this damn winter. Thank goodness for 5-minute epoxy.
  • Today I bought a used folding bicycle for $20 that someone had out for sale on their lawn. Its so very cool. I think my son will like it.
  • I registered for the No Frills All Thrills 5 Mile Trail Run on Saturday. This replaces my scheduled 15K (9.3 miles) , which is fine because I need trails more than I need mileage.
  • I spoke with Danny Dreyer today about the ChiRunning class and he said they were all full up. He put me on a waiting list and said if he gets another instructor he may add more people. I told him that Pam said she liked his class and that Mark called him a wimp. He wants to meet Pam privately and said that he’s going to kick Mark’s butt.
  • There’s an article in Runner’s World this month about barefoot running and the barefoot runner himself, Ken Saxton (or is it Bob?).
  • People at the park keep asking me if I have a phone. I’m beginning to think there’s some joke about asking a guy who’s running if he has a phone, like he would stop his workout to wait for you to finish your call.
  • Tonight I ran my 9×400 intervals at the park. It was tough stuff. I suppose a thinking man would have marked off his .25 mile then run back and forth over it. Jon didn’t do that, he ran along the path and tried using the stupid Forerunner at different points and tried to figure it all in his head. Alot of the interval times got screwed up, but most of them were around 1:43 - 145 for each quarter mile, which I think is ~7:00. Faster than I needed but I had a hard time judging because I haven’t done much pacing like this on the road.

My sh!ns hurt. Alot. (Notice I didn’t use the word “shins” because I don’t want to increase my ranking in search engines for “my shins hurt”. I aint’ stupid.) They hurt from the start in the intervals. I recognize this pain. This is the pain of too-much-too-soon, right before the pain of you-are-going-to-die-you-idiot. While I was walking back from the last interval I passed the field where, about a year ago, I was trying to do some running on the grass to see if I could run a bit without my shins hurting. As I recall it would be a while after than before my shins were fixed. I needed 4 weeks of no running at all to get them to heal. We don’t want to be back there again.

Is 92 miles enough for this month? I think so. Its WAAAAAAY more than my previous monthly max which was in the 60’s somewhere. Higdon’s plan has two rest days before the race so tomorrow and friday are resting. Stretching definately and maybe some ice too. Ice tonight.

How is everyone else’s body feeling these days?

My body feels just fine ;-). Oops that’s not what you meant. Me bad!

PS - Jon, lesson in html tags “ul” starts a list “li” is for bulletted list and of course don’t forget to close each tag after. Both are listed on the Quicktags bar when you are Writing your post.

Jon, if your running form is correct, you should not be getting shin-splints. I should know. I have poor form and have them occasionally. Now, go talk to your wimpy Chi guy and get him to correct your form

AND QUIT PUTTING WORDS IN MY MOUTH!

People, this man is evil. He’s going to get me arrested at the border on the day I finally come to the US for an RBF race! ;)

Mr. Maxomileage - you better put on some brakes. Save it for April when you can run with your shirt off.

whatever anyone says about running barefoot, I don’t do it anymore, and I haven’t in more than 20 years. I stepped on a pop-top a long time ago, sliced my foot open and couldn’t run for several weeks that summer. No more pop-tops in the grass, but there’s plenty of chance for broken glass.

Shins are the canary for new shoes, at least in my experience.

And I’m jealous of the folding bike - it’d be absolutely great for traveling.

Good work getting your son out on hills - I’m still trying to get mine to pedal his bike faster than a slow walk. He just looks at me with big eyes when I mention that it’ll be less wobbly once he gets up to speed and the gyroscopic action of the wheels kicks in…

Wow, you’ve been busy. The trail race sounds great. If my shins start to hurt it is normally when I need new shoes. How old are your shoes?

      Non sequiturs:
Cool about the bike. Funny about the phone. You are fast. I need to run intervals. But not if it will hurt my shins. Are you running too much? My body is feeling great.
