More weights!
Last night was weight night again and since its been two weeks, things were not so very good. Really dropped off in everything. Don’t believe for a minute that running builds strength in you legs very much. I mean if you started off low, then maybe yes. But if you are lifting and then switch to running, those muscles drop down fast. Well, they do for me.
And my shoulder/arm still hurts. According to my workout logbook its been exactly 1 month since I first noticed the pain. The week before there was a fair amount of weakness in that shoulder. Hmmmm. I think its been two weeks since I switched the mouses (mice) over to the left. I’m not sure there is improvement. One more week and then I call the (sigh) doctor, pay my $20 to be told to ice it and take ibuprofin. UNLESS, I insist on seeing Shannon again. :)
On a funny note (in a stalking kind of way), here is the shoe of choice for the Nike Brothers: Nike Pegasus!
I finally spotted the model on their shoes last night and was able to find the exact color on the web. And by the way, these two guys are probably the most courteus members at the gym. The stretching room is getting very crowded lately and they always give up their spot for someone else that comes in to stretch. Nice shoes, nice guys.
One more thing, I have a 15K race on my training plan for 4/2, but there are none to be found. There’s a 5 mile trail run though so I may sign up for that. I think if it was a road race I would skip it and do a trail long run that weekend instead because I need more trail time.
And I saw a flyer for a 5K the week before the race, BUT its so close to home and its a nice super flat course and I could maybe PR because its so flat. And its a first time for this race so nobody knows about so all the speedy people will be sleeping in bed dreaming of big races. Not very sporting actually, but I’ll take what I can get. Although, they didn’t mention any food. Hmmm. Anyway, one week before the race is pretty stupid, right?
Oh yeah, and I have a super cool something arriving in the mail on Thursday! :)

Yeah, lifting and running are kind of at cross purposes. The motions you go through while lifting with your legs are not exactly running motions–running builds its own set of muscles.

I know what you mean about strength. In my quest to take lots of pilates and yoga classes, I gave up weight lifting for two weeks. Yeeee, I can notice a difference already, especially in my arms and waist. Different muscles. So, whatcha gettin???

Chris (Brogan) told me that short sprints and weight lifting engage same muscles, and endurance training (long runs) use/develop completely different muscle fibres. That makes sense - when I keep my runs relatively short (30-40 min) and favor intervals, I’m able to lift weights with full intensity. Long (60-90 min) runs empty muscles so that I can’t work out effectively for a week or so. Intresting huh!

Running builds and strengthens certain muscles especially the big ones (quads and hams). Depending on your running style you are probably building one more than the other. Weight training can help to reduce the imbalances and then reduce the risk of injury. I was told to help build the inner part of my quad to do small pulses at the top of the leg extension machine, and it has helped.

if i couldn’t find a race on a weekend that i needed to race, i always got a friend with a bike to come along for a faster run. they’d carry any extra fluids to simulate water stops and first aid stations, and they could help motivate me when the going got rough. it’s a good alternative if you can’t find a race.
have the friend make a tin-foil medal for you too…and wear a home made bib number =)

I love this tricky racing mentality … hoping that the speedy people don’t know about the race?? That killed me, and yes, made me snort my coffee. (Thanks for THAT mess! :) Now you’ve already got the book … is this some Paula-graphed item that you bought on e-bay?!?!

Are you sharing what the super cool thing is, or is that a mystery?

Jon! Do the 5k! Do it! It’s flat! It’s close to home! I don’t know about speedy people sleeping through it, but it sounds like fun.
And yeah, isn’t interesting how fit we can be in one area, and how totally NOT in another. Sigh. I hate that.

yeah! Give it up Jon! What is it?
Doing HILL work is much more like lifting weights. Do lots of hills and just watch your calves puff up like popeye!

Do the 5K, set the PR, and then do the 5K course twice again while waiting for the awards ceremony!
But if you do the unknown race, you’ve got to let the Twins know about it, too…

TOTAL homos (not that there is anything wrong with that).
You need to stalk them more diligently..perhaps peek into their home(s). See if the come together or seperately.
Good for you and the weights..something I CANNOT get into..try as I might..well I’m not really trying am I. I do it for a week and then after my rest day I totally forget to go back down there and do it again.
