Not again

Had a little tickle in my throat yesterday and got some congestion last night. Still a little stuffy this morning. A gough? Just a little tickle. A tickle. Not bad. And its not going to get any worse. Dammit. DAMMIT!!!!!

Taking my vitamins, and echinacia (sp?), and extra folic acid, and vitamin C, and decongestant, and lots of water, and wearing garlic around my neck, and sacrificing chickens in the back yard because there is no damn way I’m getting sick again and NOT BEFORE A FRIGGIN’ RACE DAMMIT!!!!!! I have a friggin’ chance to actually place (maybe) and I’m not giving it up for some stupid little sniffle that (to be honest) is probably because the government is testing the country’s susceptability to biological attack by spreading different flu viruses across the country and limiting the amount of vaccines!

That might be over the top (ignoring the fact that they did it in the 60’s).

I also didn’t get any sleep because I read half of Paula Radcliffe’s book and was totally wired about racing after that. Fascinating reading. If you want to get pumped for training and racing, read this book. So much stuff about athletics and runners coming up from a very young age. She was a straight A student in high school and college (or the English equivalent term). When she was doing altitude training in France (college years) she had to work at the training center to pay for staying there. I always thought that big time agents picked her up and trained her and just took care of her finacially. I found out she has asthma. Wouldn’t have guessed that in a million years because you’d think she’d be lying on the ground after the race.

One other interesting thing. In 1994 Paula had a foot injury and ended up running through it. She has a high threshhold for pain and just kept training. Turns out she had a collapsed arch (are you listening, Mark?). Eventually, it created a stress fracture in her foot. It took months and months to diagnose it and she ended up being out of training for a total of 9 months trying to fix the wrong problem and, eventually, to fix the right one. Her lesson: listen to your body. Good advice.

Today is a rest day for me. Hope your runs are going well. Good luck to all you bloggers racing tomorrow!

First, it’s good to know a place where i can get sacrificial chickens.

I’ve been drowning myself with OJ, water, eating lots of fruit, etc. trying to get rid of a similar bug. I wonder if a frozen turkey will work as a sacrificial chicken. I was reading a magazine article on Paula, the gal’s got guts - pretty hard core finishing a race with foot injury. Tomorrow is Jack vs. the common cold at a half-marathon. I’ll have to keep Paula’s 1994 run on my mind (and my turkey around my neck;).

Right now I’m getting through the second or third cold of the season. I don’t remember a worse winter than this one. Does this mean that the government is doing a good job? Anyway, I should not comment any more on that or I might get in one of those special lists they have, you know, the ones that guarantees you a “vacation” in Southern Cuba. Conspiracy theories are fun.
