No trail shoes to be found
First let me give a big THANKYOU to Dianna for getting my name up in lights. That is, getting it into Runner’s World Daily News today. Thanks, Dianna, for the kind words and for including me (your check will be arriving shortly ;) ). You rock, Dianna!
I went to two running stores today, looking for a pair of trail shoes.
Me: Hi, I’m looking for some trail shoes.
Shoe Dude: Uhhhhh, traaaaaaaaaillllllll shoooooooes. Yeah, we have these here.
Me: Um, do you have any others?
SD: No, those are all we carry.
Me: People don’t do alot of trail running here?
SD: Yeah, but you really don’t need trail shoes. I wear regular shoes and never have a problem.
Me: Don’t the flat treads get all filled with mud?
SD: I don’t run where its muddy.
Me: Are you sure it was a trail.
SD: ????????
Both stores had a similar conversation. I guess trails aren’t big here so nobody carries many brands of trail shoes. They had Brooks Adrenaline Trail (or something like that) and I do like Brooks Adrenalines (the street version), but I wanted to try on some of the………——..-.-.-.-.-.-.-.—-.-.-
DID I MENTION I HAVE DIAL-UP AND IT SUCKS BECAUSE IT CONSTANTLY HANGS UP ON ME?!?!?!!?! DID I??? IT SUCKS REALLY REALLY BADLY!!!!!!!!!
.-.-.—.-.—–……..Vasque’s that Lynne and Chris recommended. I did see a pair of Addidas Trail Response but didn’t try them on. I was a little dismayed that neither store had ever heard of Vasque, which made me really believe that they hardly ever sell trail shoes at all. Its looking like mail order for my trail shoes.
The good news is that I came away with a new pair of Mizuno Wave Alchemy 3’s (just like the pair I have which are my most favoritestest in the whole world) for only $50! On sale! Clearance! Somebody pinch me because I’m in shoe heaven!
Ok, here’s the problem: They have more. As in 2-3 more boxes of my shoes. $50. What do I do? Do I spend money I don’t have by borrowing it from the blood sucking credit card companies (do those jerks ever stop calling you?) and buy 3 more pairs knowing that I will have saved tons of money and won’t need more shoes until next year? Or will the shoes go bad? I hear rumors about shoes going bad but if you buy them at the store, they don’t exactly have a freshness date on them, so how old are they then?
Need some help. Stock up or not stock up?

Shoes go bad???? Just how could that be?? Curdling shoes?? Nah … I don’t buy that. I say stock up. If you can afford them, and you love them, buy them and save.

Ok, I’m not usually so opinionated about things - do your thing, that’s my motto. BUT, I have to say, I totally love the ritual of getting new running shoes. I go try on different ones, and then always buy the same ones I always buy. I like it that they come in different colors, even though the shoe hasn’t changed. And I love getting them home and lacing them up and taking them for a test drive. I love the feeling of the new shoes, because I am a procrastinator and typically put off buying the new ones until the old ones are fairly broken down. That means the new ones are a huge improvement! I just don’t know that I’d get the same experience if they were just waiting in the closet for me.
But, realistically, I could see where huge savings would be hard to pass up. They run anywhere from 60 to 90 dollars on line, so if you’ve been paying 90 - stock up. If you’ve been paying 60 - it’s probably not worth paying credit bills on them.
Whew! I’m such a blowhard today!

I’ve heard that the performance of shoes can degrade over time in storage, but it’s only by a very small amount. The shoe might lose a little bit of cushioning, but such a small amount that you wouldn’t even notice

Forgot to mention—I’ve been buying Asics Cumulus IV’s for my road shoes, since they’re cheaper than “this year’s model,” and I haven’t noticed any problem with them at all.

I found out today that shoes need rest too. Weird.

Would you be sad if you went back to find those shoes and they were discontinued? If so, then stock up. Especially at that price!

From what I understand, it takes a while for the shoes to ‘go bad’…just store them someplace that isn’t too hot, too cold or too damp and use them within an year or so. That would be my advice (there was an article on this topic recently…I just can’t remember where…if I find it, I’ll pass it along.)
