Pickin’ and a grinnin’

I went out for my 6 mile long run in the blinding snowstorm. I really wish I had those ski goggles now. I had to squint most of the time while heading into the wind. Speaking of which, I was heading into the wind for most of the run. Funny how it changes direction to face you just about the time you turn around to head home.

I was looking for a 9:30 pace (actually, anything between 10:00 and 9:00) and I averaged just about smack on with 9:27. I know for a fact that I was close to 9:00 on the downhills with the wind, and well over 10:00 going uphill into the wind. It all evens out in the end I guess.

With all the snow I ran into a new problem. The snow clumps up in the little hole in the bottom of my Mizuno’s. Then the snowball gets bigger and bigger until you are hobbling along and your hip is screaming. I found a good stick to pick it out with, and had to stop 5 times before I was done. Little rest breaks. :)

I felt pretty good on this run. I ate good in the morning and didn’t get cramps and all. True it was a much slower pace than yesterday, but there was blinding snow, and wind and polar bears and everything so it kinda made up for it. Still happy with the run.

Registration is opening today for the Detroit Marathon so I plan on registering. YES, I know this has always jinxed me in the past, registering early that is. But this time is different, ok! I’m saving $5 and I’ll get some cool lucky number. No injuries this year. Good clean running followed by yummy snacks.

How was your run today?

Congratulations on registering for Detroit! It sounds like a cool race– crosses over into Canada, doesn’t it? I’m sure you’ll succeed– just remember to slow down on the very long training runs, because from personal experience, that’s the easiest way to get injured… It sounds crazy when they say “two minutes slower than 10K pace,” but the experts are right!

Blowing snow is one of the worst weather conditions to run in. Good on you for getting out there and getting the run in. Even better that you met your pace goal!

YAY JON! A good run AND biting the bullet and registering. I am chicken and never register for anything until the last possible moment.
I did not run today…it’s a rest day for me.
    thank heavens. I am bushed.
Glad you had good, albeit snowy, run!
I HATE IT WHEN SNOW CLUMPS TO THE BOTTOM OF MY SHOES!

Try putting a little vaseline in the hole(in you shoe) It will sure keep sticky snow out of a horses foot so it might just work on your shoe too!

How many polar bears did you see in that blinding snow storm? More to the point, is it possible to see a polar bear in a blinding snow storm? When I was younger I sketched two polar bears having a cigarette in a blinding snow storm. All you could see was the burning tip and a little smoke.

*gasp* A marathon! I suppose running in the snow, with pneumonia, isn’t enough for some people! This is exciting news, and I can’t wait to live through you vicariously. :)

Blinding snow, wind and polar bears? Are you certain you did not run all the way up to Finland - that sounds awfully lot like my typical run :D Running is on hold this week though - some people say germs die in cold weather but I rather not take a risk to elongate this flu.

Yeah a Marathon for Jon! Heh, I warned you about Mizuno’s and snow. I tried trail runners, but don’t like em as much as my Mizuno’s. I’ve used the stick trick too. :-)

It must be a mizuno thing … I had the same problem last winter, the ice and snow was packed so tightly I could barely get it out (and no go stick, just my car key), then a mile later it was back again

What’s even worse than the wind changing direction to blow into your face the whole time is when the topography changes to make your entire run uphill! At least, sometimes it feels that way.
