Sledding is NOT good crosstraining!
I took my son sledding on Monday afternoon. I was scheduled for strength training but figured walking up and down that hill, pulling the sled (and him most likely) would be a pretty good trade. I still planned to do some weight training at the gym anyway, but a little lighter.
When I was younger, we went down some pretty big hills. We crashed. We rolled. Sometimes you got snow stuffed up bad places. I don’t remember actually hurting myself. Maybe I just blocked it out of my mind.
Well, we went down this hill a total of three times. The first two times were good. The last time we ended up turning sidesways and then flipping over and I did this major face plant into the snow. All I could think about was not rolling over my son. But OWWWWWWWOWOWOWOW! Did that hurt! The ground caught my chin and whipped my head around and when I got up I couldn’t figure out which way it was supposed to point. It was wierd. I heard some kids saying “Did you see that guy wipe out?”. I was done for the day.
Got a nice big scrape on my chin (which is a joy to shave over, let me tell you). My nose feels bruised on the bridge. And my right hip/buttock is killing me. I thought there would be a big bruise but I lucked out. It sure hurts to walk down stairs and get up from a chair and just walking in general.
Ok, old people have NO business sledding down big hills. Leave that to the kids who are made of rubber (edited by Jon 12/30/04) and can’t die. I’ll watch from the top, thankyou.
So Tuesday I went running on the ‘mill. Three miles are 8:57 pace. I wish I could just set the belt to the exact pace and not MPH. Not much eventful about a treadmill run.
Oh and I had to clear out the basement to get a new hot water heater (which I didn’t end up getting but that’s another boring story), so my wife sets up this little basketball hoop for my son in the newly open area down there. Short, plastic, just for fun. Well, a few minutes later he’s jumping and slamming the ball into the net yelling “You wanna piece of me?!” Where do they get this stuff?
Today I have crosstraining.

We took the kids sledding Sunday and Tuesday. We go to the huge hill at the school by us. They have a stair case because it’s at the footbal field/track. Trust me, carrying a 3 year old and the sled up the stairs qualifies as a strength/cross training work out. I was whipped by the end. No big wipe outs to report. :)

Oww! Hope you feel better soon. I wiped out one time sledding as a kid. I hit a tree stump and it knocked the wind out of me and bruised my chest. So much for being rubber-like. I took a break for the rest of the day and drank hot cocoa.

Wow, that sounds like a beating. And I just read about how great sledding was for crosstraining. They even had all these dorky workout ideas for doing while on your sled. Not with kids around, I wouldn’t. But ow.

LOL! That was funny. Feels good to be a kid again but it hurts, huh?

Sledding is one of those activities that sound so fun, but can be so painful…ice skating is like that for me too. But of course all this talk about sledding makes me want to go!!

Sorry, like the others, I couldn’t help but laugh. Reminded me of when I was a kid. My mom and friends went night sledding. We umm forgot to tell them we had built this tiny jump on the hill. We were in the neighbors yard and heard the screams. Oh oh, guess they found the jump. Thankfully they were ok and we didn’t get grounded.

Ouch for sure. But I had to laugh because it reminded me of when I decided to take MY son on in basketball last year and ended up sprawled across the gravel in the driveway. Not a pretty picture. Hope you heal well, Jon.

First, I believe that should read, “…kids who are made of rubber.” Just saying.
Second, I always call an 8:57 treadmill pace 9:00. But maybe that’s just me.
Third, maybe your son’s been reading Chris? Since I’m sure it couldn’t be coming from closer to home, right? Hmm. Maybe he just needs some more chocolate?

Toboganning is GREAT hill training if your kids are too young to haul the sled up by themselves, but you can’t go around wiping out like that. You don’t want to hurt any running muscles, eh?
