And I ran

I finally went out and ran. Off to the park for a quick 3 miles. Actually, it turned out to be 6. After one lap, I just felt like going again.

And you know what? Its very cold in the winter. It was 40F or so, but windy and it felt pretty cold. I wore my long sleeve shirt and a windbreak/running jacket I’ve had for years. And my ear warmers. And I don’t own real running pants so I wore my old cotton sweatpants. They worked out real nice except when the wind blew. They are amazingly drafty.

I need to get up the courage to buy real running lycra tights. Just not there yet physically or mentally. Maybe Santa will bring me regular running pants, that fit my body type and won’t offend others.

There were very few people there the first time I arrived. I had to leave and go home again because the insole on my left shoe kept creeping up and sliding out the back. Dammit. I think the Nike Kantara’s need to have a substitute insole because the ones they come with really suck. So I drove home and got my Mizuno Alchemy’s.

Did I mention that I love my Mizuno’s? I really, really do. :)

So I ran the reverse route because that put the wind at my back going out, and the return route into the wind was in the woods so it wasn’t so bad. The Mizuno’s make this funny “clop” or “pop” sound when my foot hits. Kinda like cupping your hands and clapping. Wierd.

I left the heart rate monitor and radio at home. Too much distraction. I took Forerunner and she behaved very nicely. I decided its a “she” because of the tempermental nature of something that is not necessarily essential, but darn nice to have around when its behaving. *ducking and running*

Very few folks when I came back with good shoes. A few runners and one rollerblader. The path was wet but no big puddles. I didn’t want to soak my good shoes. I tried to keep an even pace around 9:30, and it felt pretty good. Not killing myself and breathing was reasonable. If I had to guess at the heart rate, I would put it in the 150′s. The splits:

Mile…..pace
1……….9:21
2……….9:21
3……….9:26
4……….9:25
5……….9:06
6……….9:19

Total run time 56:00. Believe it or not, during mile five, I was thinking about the last race and without realizing it, I had picked up my pace a little. Funny.

I feel pretty good now. Not the usual fall-on-the-floor and die feeling. Shins were a little crampy during the run and my right hip felt a little sore on the last mile. Other than that, it was a very nice run.

  1. A 3-miler that turns into 6 is never bad (unless you’re lost). Great consistent pace!

Get some spandex, dude. If the others don’t want to look at it, they’ll pass you. If they can’t, they probably look just like you.

L.L. Bean has some great running pants/tights that aren’t skin-tight. I also got a great pair of fleece-lined wicking black tights from REI.com. What is a Forerunner? Gotta get me one of those things; I still haven’t figure out how to program my heart rate monitor yet …

Nice to have around when “SHE” is behaving heh? You men.

I too hate the running tights, but I’m going to need some soon.

Hey, great run! Get the tights, Jon. You deserve them and to hell with what anyone thinks. I love my Mizunos, too:)

  5. Deene says:

Good going, Jon. if wearing the tight really bother you maybe you can cover up with a pair of baggy shorts. I’ve seen some runner wearing tights that way.

  6. Lara says:

See if you can find some zebra print tights so you can at least be looking all David Lee Roth while you run. Hey, if ya gotta wear ‘em ya might as well go for broke!

  7. Mizuno’s are the BEST!!! I have been running in them for the last 3 years. They do however suck on muddy or snowy trails as everything clumps up in the hollow and becomes uneven & uncomfortable. I gotta get me some trail shoes… *sigh*
