A little crosstraining and more goals.

I did a short 20 minute ride on the stationary bike and then a walk with my wife around the track. Not much of a workout but I’m coming back into this slowly.

I really hurt my right leg in the race. I’m very certain now. Over a week and it still has that funny tight dull ache inside. My right calf is tight and hurts sometimes. And the shins? Business as usual for those idiots. The rest of my leg has me worried. It hurts inside the leg, when I put weight on it, but only at certain times. I don’t want another stupid wierdo injury that plagues me for the next race.

And I decided I am definately running in the Running Fit Trail Half Marathon. It is April 24th, 2005. That means if I am following the Higdon 12 week schedule, I start training 1/31/05. Which means I have basically 2 months to recover my sorry legs and get back up to training pace again. I will need a base of atleast 12 miles a week by then. Not a problem I think, barring injuries and silly things like unemployment spoiling my day.

I wonder if I should try the intermediate plan. I have a few races now. Maybe speedwork is something I could try. Maybe I could blend the two plans!

You know what’s wierd? As I think about considering this, my mind goes immediately to my shin and how it feels. Sitting at my desk, it is cramping up. A sign from the running entities to keep myself in check. :)

Ok, I have until the end of January to get ready. The running will need to back way off for right now. I need to heal up the shins more. More crosstraining, but hey, there is a Boot Camp class and a Cardio kickboxing class that I can take at the gym. Might be a fun crosstraining time until January.

I also want to work on toning and building/maintaning strength in my legs. I want to avoid bulk, but I do want strength. And good calf strength. And core muscles too. That seems to be a big factor. And my lower back. I think I have very weak lower back muscles which is probably the root cause of my lower back pain. And I’m going to lose 10 pounds. I put on so much weight running (actually from all the eating after the running) that I am in serious danger of sliding back down that slippery slope I came back from a few years ago. I hate to pay twice for the same real estate. Target weight for 1/31/05: 175 lbs. Stretch objective: 170 lbs. Current weight: Uh, won’t know for certain until tomorrow, but it ain’t pretty.

I will create the most beautiful workout plan for cardio and weights. By the time 1/31/05 rolls around, I will be a lean, mean, kick-ass running machine. Maybe not so much that, but I am not going to be the jiggly, sorry-butt, injured slug I am now.

First objective for this week: No more cake before bed. Gasp! Yes, Jon has been cheating and eating chocolate cake from the Cub Scout Bake Off. But the cake can’t go to waste! Yes it can, or it will go to YOUR WAIST! Ok, no more cake. Or choco….uh….no cho….no more chocol….we’ll work on that one.

Can’t have your cake and eat too.. but you have a good solid plan. That trail run looks very appealing.

A good plan to rest those legs. And good to put the plan in writing, too. It helps with the motivation!

Looks like a solid plan to build up to your trail 1/2. Don’t forget to do some training on trails, eh.

    “no more chocol”
Don’t go there, Jon! It’s not worth it! Keep the chocolate, keep the running - you CAN have it all…

Sounds like you could use a good, solid, painful deep tissue massage. As for the plans - they seem pretty solid to me. Its a little weird for me though, reading about everyone’s post-season planning when our season’s only halfway through :-) Have a great Thanksgiving.

A trail half? How fun! If I plan it right, I can foil your plans to get me drunk and trip me by planning my next marathon the same weekend as your half…[insert maniacal laughter here]. See, you should never tell you ‘enemy’ your secret plan. Jeesh. You may be a genius but you’re not an EVIL genius.
