I need a goal!
Ok, so the half marathon is over and while my legs are returning to full strength (maybe I’ll get lucky and they actually will this time), I need to find another goal. Without it, I’m spinning helplessly and not going to motivate myself.
So here’s what I am looking at so far:
The Detroit Marathon - This is next fall (October some time) and I have a whole year to train, get injured, start again, complain, heal and then race. This is a local race so no hotel bills. I know how to get there and the gas money won’t break the bank. The race is well organized and fully sponsored so well marked miles, good water stops, and lots of spectators. This goes on the A list.
Dexter-Ann Arbor run 1/2 Marathon - Its a good course, local, and they had great snacks this year. :) The drawback is that I already ran the 5K this year so it kinda takes away the excitement of a whole new race. The T-shirt was dreadful. This would be in June next year so temperatures may be warmer than I’d like for a race. If I did this one, its possible it would cut my training much too close to the Detroit Marathon to do both. This one goes on the B-list.
Ann Arbor Turkey Trot - There’s a 10K and a 5K, and this is November 14th. Haven’t got much time til then, but it certainly would fit well with a finish to a recovery period. This would probably not be such a big race, but it is close to home. Set up by Tortoise and Hare like the Hell-o-ween so I’d expect a similar quality. This goes on the A-list.
The Martian Half Marathon - This is a spring race in March. I ran this as my first half marathon. I had a good time and it was well run with good snacks and a cool medal, but I really want to do something different. This goes on the B-list.
The Running Fit Trail Marathon! - This one looks so cool. Its next April and its close to home again. I’d be doing the half marathon. There are few spectators I would think (much like the Hell-o-ween). And its a TRAIL race. (Did you hear that Chris?). Something new for me :) This goes on the A-list.
The Ann Arbor Track Club - They had a 5K last year on Valentines Day which was alot of fun. It was my first race since I started running. They were a nice bunch of people and put on a good race. I would do this again if they were going to repeat it this year. If they have something similar (St. Patrick’s Day?) I might do that. This goes on the A-list even though it isn’t officially scheduled anywhere.
That’s what I have so far. More to be added when I get more ideas. I think I need a place to post these. Hmmmm.

Don’t worry about the half being too close to the full - train for the full, and run the half when it comes up. Heck, I (along with most of Austin’s distance running community) am doing the 3M half just two weeks before Freescale this Spring.
Do the 5K on Thanksgiving. Just for fun - but blast it and knock a PR out of the park. Heck, its only 3 miles.
The others - what you say makes much sense.

You’ve got a good variety here. I agree–having a plan makes it all seem to make sense. Just keep looking ahead.
