How far have we really come?

I was listening to my wife read to my son about a Pharaoh in ancient Egypt. The story talked about the sun god and beliefs about what the sun was doing up there, moving across the sky and just dissapearing.

I thought about what we could show them today, about how the world is not what they thought it was. Then I thought, you know, they’d just smirk and point out that all we did was get farther away from the earth to see it from a distance. Big deal. If they could have done that, they might have come to different conclusions too. Maybe that’s all we’ve really done in 5000 years, on the grand scheme of things. Stepped a little farther back.

Lots of smaller stuff along the way (medicine, plastic, chocolate, etc), but on the whole, the Earth is still a big chunk of rock spinning around the sun, and I’m not so certain we’d have much to brag about to the Pharaoh.

No running yesterday, just philosophy.
