New shoes, new soles, new bread

Hal Higdon says Monday is rest day but for me it was shopping day.

Sunday I did 30 minutes of biking, and all of my upper body strength training. It was an hour and half for everything so I think I did ok with my 1 hour of cross training even if some of it was weights. My right shin was sore while biking and today while I was walking around work. Not sharply painful but sore like muscle soreness. The pain is much lower than it was during my 1/2 marathon training, more in the muscle. Its not good to have this coming back and I was hoping it would get better but I have to admit I might be just burying my head in the sand.

So, on the advice of a wise friend :) I ordered a pair of Superfeet inserts to put in my shoes.

We’ll see if they help my shins. At the very least, they don’t do anything and I’m no worse off, but I have so much to gain if they work. I read online reviews of them also and everyone seemed to love them, except for one guy that said they almost crippled him. I’m hoping that guy had other problems that he isn’t talking about.

I also went to the running store to have them review my running form. Over the phone they said they do that, but in the store they just watch you walk in bare feet, even though there is a treadmill right there. Hmmmmm. I was a little underwhelmed. The shoe lady said that I overpronated. I think I knew that from before, but it was good to hear someone else confirm it. I needed a second pair of shoes anyway to start rotating into because the Adrenaline’s will be spent by the time the LBCM comes around. So, I tried some on. I tried the Muzuno Wave (I think that’s the name), but it wasn’t very comfortable. I went through six pairs before I found one that I liked, finally settling on Asics Gel Evolution.

These were so darn comfortable I wanted to wear them home. They kinda wrapped my feet like a glove. Now I have a second pair of running shoes to put my new Superfeet into. Hoping that soon I will have supershins to match.

My new shoes are accepted by the American Podiatric Medical Association.

My sister used to work in a shoe store and she used to tell every customer that her brother had the exact shoes they were looking at. She said I should have a warehouse filled with shoes for all the ones she claimed I owned. The woman at the running store was no different. She personally owned five of the shoes I tried on and the other one a very good friend had and he never got shin splints. I guess it was possible that she was being honest but it seemed very coincidental to me.

Sunday night around 2 AM, my breadmaker did a flying leap off the counter and smashed its stupid self to pieces on the kitchen floor. I did a late night repair job and had it together enough to make another loaf for Monday, but the thing wasn’t going to make the long haul. So, last night I bought a brand new Oster breadmake. I put it outside in the garage to make a make-believe loaf while it burned off the manufacturing oils from the heating element (major stinky). The recipes are different and I’m hoping I don’t have to change them around too much. I don’t like adding all the vegetable oil.

Today I have 2.0 miles to run and I’m going to try out the new shoes on the treadmill. Hopefully by this weekend I’ll have my Superfeet too.
