That’s quite a collection – a collection that can be a little daunting (and time consuming) to browse through.

So I’ve done the work for you. What you see below is a week’s worth of searching, culling and categorizing of the best, most interesting, most informative, most inspiring books from the vastness of Amazon. In developing the list, I tried to represent most aspects of distance running, while also paying attention to popular items that frequently make it on Amazon user Listmania lists. There’s a little here for everyone. Training, heroes, women’s running books, history books, coffee table books, and much, much more. I’m hoping a few items on the list even surprise you.

I’ve intentionally gone lean with book descriptions (amazon’s already got that amply covered). Think of this list as ‘Amazon-lite’ or ‘Amazon Concentrate’ – a very focused collection of the best Amazon has to offer on the subject of running. I hope you like this list, and I’d love to hear if you’ve got a favorite book that’s not here.

So, without further ado, on to the books!

Best Coffee Table Books
<table

Throughout the 1950s the most talked about athlete in Britain was Gordon Pirie. Part of the explanation was that Gordon kept talking about himself and what he might and might not do. Making statements, for example, like the one when he predicted he would smash the world 5000m. record with a time of around 13min. 40sec. some 18 seconds below the then world record. He knew how to ruffle the feathers of his fellow competitors, but he did have talent in abundance.

What’s cool about Pirie’s book are his discussions about running form. The 20-year-old already has a remarkable record, with a gold medal in the 200m and world records at the 100m and 400m. But they are while competing as a Paralympian. Pistorius is a double amputee who was born without fibulas and uses special carbon fiber blades as his lower legs during running events.

The athlete has repeatedly asked to compete with able-bodied Olympian wannabes to see if he can truly win at their game. But officials have been reluctant to let the lad enter able-bodied track events because they believe his prosthetics may give him a mechanical advantage.

South African Championships. But the International Association of Athletics Federations has not been swayed to date. That may change after this upcoming weekend, when Pistorius competes at an international track meet known as the British Grand Prix. Both his performance and the intense press attention could tilt the scales in his favor (<a

There’s never been an amputee to run close to my time.”

The question this weekend is whether able-bodied runners will be able to run close—or better—than his time as well.
Article Summary: A review of the Runner’s World book “Run Less, Run Faster” by Bill Pierce, Scott Murr, and Ray Moss

[rating:4]

<img
style=' float: left; padding: 4px; margin: 0 7px 2px 0;' src="http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/51B81WdFO5L._PIsitb-dp-500-arrow,TopRight,45,-64_OU01_SL160_.jpg" alt="run less run faster"class='alignleft' />I first heard about Run Less, Run Faster and the FIRST training program in a brief Runner’s World article in early 2007 and was intrigued by the training concepts presented. The article discussed a relatively new training program, scientifically proven over a few years and hundreds of runners, based on running three days a week with integrated cross training on the off days. This short note lead me to the Furman Institute of Running and Scientific Training and eventually to this book (although at the time of my initial interest the book was not yet available). The concepts presented in this book, while not revolutionary, are definitely a departure from the classic “more miles is better” philosophy and the book has really changed the way I view my approach to training.

Run Less, Run Faster is a quick and easy read (only about 300 pages) that delivers a wealth of solid information at a level that is easy to understand and quickly allows the reader to put in to action the concepts and methods outlined. The book is broken down in to four main sections plus one bonus section:

Section I: The FIRST Approach

Section II: How to Follow the FIRST Training Program

Section III: Performance Factors

Section IV: Supplemental Training

Bonus Section: Getting to Boston

This format allows the authors take you though the basics of the program clearly and concisely. The reader will quickly come up speed on the 3plus2 method, the 3 core workouts, and correct pacing for all of the prescribed workouts.

Section I lays out the basics of the plan, steps for new runners, and information on setting realistic goals. In reality, this is just a brief overview of the rest of the book—an introduction to the concepts explored in much more detail further on.

Section II dives much deeper in to the training program. The reader gets a full description of all of the core running workouts, what they aim to achieve, correct paces, and how to run them correctly. In addition to a detailed description of the program, there are plenty of pace charts and training plans to help the reader plan their specific training program. Finally, the authors provide important information on rest and recovery as well as year round training tips and tricks.

Section III covers a few topics that are common to all running programs. These topics include, running in hot and cold weather, training with and avoiding running related injuries, and basic nutrition information. These are all very brief sections but they include enough information to be helpful.

Section IV covers one basic topic—strength training for runners. The reader is given a clear plan that is fairly simple and easy to apply. No expensive weights or benches are necessary and the program, as delivered, should not take an excessive amount of time. A nice addition to any runner’s training regimen.

The last section of the book outlines what is necessary in terms of paces, training, and effort to qualify for Boston. It is broken down into the various age group qualifying times and gives the reader a few guidelines to look for to determine if a Boston qualifying run is possible based on past performance. I really appreciated the realistic view of what is necessary in terms of my current performance to qualify for Boston. Overall, this section is a nice addition to the book.

To me, this is a well written, well documented, and scientifically proven method to run faster on less miles. I am currently using the plan outlined in the book for my training plan for the 2007 Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon, so far the paces, distances, and volume of training have been just right. I really appreciate the change of pace from day to day and the inclusion of various forms of cross training, it really makes the program fun and interesting to work with.

Have you read this book? href="http://www.MapMyRun.com">MapMyRun.com has been online for quite sometime but has just recently released a new and improved beta site. Route mapping sites have become an essential part of my training plan and I think—after a brief review—that this is my new favorite. This site features vastly improved functionality over the old version and other route mapping applications. It features great running specific features that will keep you coming back to the site for more than just mapping a run.

Like most Web sites today, MapMyRun.com requires a brief registration process to gather information and allow you to use all of the functionality of the site. The registration process takes about two minutes and is simple and straightforward. They do ask for a bit more information than most sites, but they do use the information (like your address) to make things easier for you—they need to know where the maps should usually start and it saves you from having to reenter it every time you create a route. Additionally, the entire service is FREE.

The core feature of the site—route mapping—is straightforward and simple. After you register and enter your address, the site allows you to draw a route directly on top of the map, point by point and street by street. As you draw your route, it tracks your mileage, shows you the route elevation change, and allows you to enter locations for water stations, first aid stations, and other points of interest along the route. You can choose from three different map views while entering your routes—Streets, Satellite, and Hybrid (a combination of Street and Satellite). Entering the route is made easier by a nice “Auto Center” feature that moves the map along with the route as you click out your way. This is something I have not seen on any other route mapping site and I really, really like this feature—it is a huge time saver.

Once the route is complete, it can be saved and either made public, allowing everyone to search, find, and use your route, or kept private, just for you. You can easily link to and bookmark your favorite routes by naming them like this: Aaron’s 6-Mile Route. Another great option is to embed your route directly in a Web page. They do provide the code to do this, but at the time of this post, I couldn’t get it to work— it could be a problem on my end.

In addition to the base route mapping functionality, MapMyRun.com also adds a whole bunch of other really useful, nicely integrated, relevant functionality into the site. MapMyRun includes the following:
Search for Runs: If you travel frequently and find yourself in unfamiliar surroundings, this little feature will prove very valuable. This allows you to search for runs by location and keyword. It also allows you to limit the search to only runs you have entered.

Daily Log: The daily log allows users to enter information once a day about a variety of personal data. You can track how much sleep you got, the quality of your sleep, your morning and evening body weight, morning and evening resting heart rates, and few other key data points.

Activity Log: The activity log lets you translate your entered routes in to actual workouts and track them on a regular basis. On page 1 of the “Add Activity” section you can enter start and end times, the type of workout (run, hike, bike, etc.), quality, effort, and the shoes you were wearing during the workout. Page 2 moves on to distance, route (linking in the routes directly from the site), total time (hh:mm:ss), heart rate, pace, and speed (in MPH).

Calendar: The calendar is pretty basic, but holds promise. If they at some point allow users to import their Google calendar or bring in outside data or export data out in someway, this could be a useful enhancement. Right now the Calendar just shows activites. There is no functionality for workout planning or having events in the future.

Races and Events: This seems to be a “coming soon” feature and as of right now, it’s really not working. The concept is great though—this allows event directors a place to easily map and store their event routes and information, and it allow you a place to go search and find the information you need to prepare for your upcoming 5K or Marathon.

Running News: This is a content section for running news and information. The Running News section, like the Races and Events, seems to be still a work in progress. Right now they are linking to CoolRunning News but Iím sure more content will follow.

Map Import: You can import map data from a GPS or *.GPX file or directly from gmap-pedometer if you have existing routes in that service. This makes moving over to this service quick and simple.

In this end, this site is still a work in progress and has few rough edges. However, if they continue to smooth things out, it has great promise and I think will prove to be a valuable asset for any runner. Take a look for yourself, see what you think and let us know your thoughts!
<img
