Photo of the Week: Swim, Bike, and Run »
I found this week’s photo while hanging out in Facebook. Seems that’s the new online hangout. But that’s the subject of a whole different post. Anyhow, Jeff, a member of CRN, also hangs out in Facebook. I found these photos while visiting his profile. Thanks Jeff for letting us borrow your photos for this week’s [...]
Digging Deep »
Professional athletes have an ability to dig deep and hold pace that leaves me slack jawed. This video shows Maryam Yusuf Jamal hanging on by a very short margin as Yelena Soboleva gains on her at the Osaka IAAF World Championships. I can only imagine the pain and determination required to keep from getting passed [...]
Photo of the Week: Scenic Route »
This weeks photo comes to us via a running friend of mine, Ken Brant. He and his team members ran the Banf Jasper Relay earlier this year. This has to be one of the most scenic races and I think I have to add it to my “to do” list. Thanks Ken! Be sure to [...]
In Honor of Our Fearless Leader »
A certain someone is running a certain race this Sunday. Although today’s inspirational video might seem like blatant advertising, it is not. It all makes sense.
The Triathlon Song »
A funny thing happens when you roll the dice and start cross-training by swimming and riding your bike. You realize that you could probably manage a triathlon. You get intrigued. You sign up for a local Tri for Fun and before you know it you’re hooked. This weekend marks the half way point between Ironman [...]
To Run, Perchance to Dream »
We all do it—we get lost in our heads while running. Some of us keep focus by listening to music or to books but regardless of what is going into our heads via the ears, it is what goes through our heads via our eyes and our dreams that really fills the space. Here is [...]
Photo of the Week: Ready, Set, GO! »
Friday night in Calgary was a fun night at the track for me and a few friends. A small group of runners met up at the new 400 meter track for a fun event put on some members of the Calgary Roadrunners. We raced first for 2,000 meters, then took a short break. Following the [...]

Movie Review – Runners High »
When I was first commissioned (i.e. asked to volunteer) to provide the Saturday Inspirational Video I showcased a trailer for a film called ‘Runners High’ about a program in Oakland California that trains kids to run a marathon. I recently had the opportunity to see the film and found myself deeply moved by the journeys [...]

Photo of the Week: Ph.D. in Running »
If there were a Ph.D in running would you make the passing grade? And would it be based on how fast you are, how long you go or how many miles you put in? What would the credit courses be? I found this week’s photo amongst Susan‘s Flickr site but the credit for the photo [...]

Photo of the Week: Elite Women @ Boston »
So last week’s “race fairy” may not have granted my wishes, but these elite women perhaps got what they wished. Akor—finishing in 11th place for women overall in 2:41:01 #61 Californian Christine H. Lundy—finishing in 12th [...]
It’s Passion That Gets You To the Finish Line »
We all have tough training days when our legs feel like lead and we’re just not in the mood. What would you do if you had no legs? How about no fingers—just a long thumb-like appendage at the end of each deformed arm? I guess you wouldn’t have to complain about your leaden legs any [...]

Photo of the Week: Wrong Way »
The caption for this photo reads “Хоббит, или Туда и обратно”. It’s Russian for “Hobbit, or There and Back”. No I don’t speak Russian but thankfully I’m geeky enough to find a way to get the internet to translate stuff for me. Thanks Mark for passing this photo on to me and thanks Candy_SK for [...]
The Will to Go On »
In 1982 a 23-year-old college student named Julie Moss made the most memorable and remarkable trip to the finish line of the Kona Ironman Championship on record. Last week Daniel Komen ran the fastest ever mile on American soil at the Prefontaine Classic in Oregon. It was not a world record but it was a blazing sub 4 mile – 3:48.28 to be exact. Paula Radcliffe – Olympic Hopeful with the Heart of a Lion »
One of my favorite sayings is “Fall down seven times, get up eight”. It’s what anyone trying to do something difficult needs to keep in mind. We all stretch ourselves to reach new goals and sometimes we fail and the only real antidote to failure is to put the disappointment behind us and just keep [...]
Photo of the Week: Mud Puddles »
Some people try to avoid puddles when running, but I think this runner has a better idea. Who says you have to be a kid to have fun? So when you see a puddle, tell us, do you run around it, try to leap over it and almost fall back in, run quickly through it [...]

Video of the Week: Great Finishes »
For most of us running on the track is a means to an end. We need a little more speed so we go run some repeat intervals. But for some of us, running on the track is the means to the ultimate end game—an Olympic medal. In the first case getting a good kick or [...]

Apologies to those of you in the colder climates for last week’s “Spring has sprung” comment. I know some of you had to run in 30°F weather or slog your way through slush. If you want to train for a marathon there is but one way to do it—train! It doesn’t matter if you are going for a sub-six-hour finish or a Boston Qualifier; you still have to train and it’s hard work and it can hurt but when you get to the end of that long, hard [...]

YouTube Video: Dean Karnazes »
Today I give you a video of my bud Dean Karnazes. Dean is by no means the only guy in the country who suffers from a certain version of lunacy that compels him to run in 100+ mile increments but he’s the only one I’ve met personally. For 2006 his shtick was to run 50 [...]

A Good Old Home Town Marathon »

The Pose Method Way to Prevent and Treat Plantar Fasciitis »
CRNs very own Lee Miller recently wrote an excellent article on Plantar Fasciitis (PF) which I’d like to use as a starting point for today’s article. What prompted me to write on this subject is that lately I’ve noticed a few people (like our editor, Jeanne) suffering from PF. Disclaimer: I’m not a doctor. In [...]

Video Inspiration: Female Runner With A Message All Of Us Can Relate To »
More often than not, the videos I show here on Saturdays feature male runners. This is not by design. In fact, I often find it difficult to find videos featuring female runners. But today, I found an amazing little gem that brought me close to tears. The video features a young woman with the universal message that running is, for many of us, time where we can reflect on life and sort things out.
Photo of the Week: Cooling Off »
Been there done this. Sometimes the best way to cool off during a race is not to drink the water but to shower yourself with it.
Video: Alan Webb’s High School World Record Mile »
