Most of this week I spent my time volunteering as part of the HSBC Calgary Marathon race committee. Sunday was the big day. One of my favorite events is the Kid’s Marathon. The kids get roughly 5 weeks to do 25.2 miles and then on race day they run the last mile. Each kid gets a great race package, a shirt and a medal.

What’s great to see is the number of kids ranging from little tots to 16+ running this event. There is a tremendous turnout every year. It was my granddaughter’s fourth time in the event. She’ll be 6-years-old in August. This year she added yet another medal and a PR to her collection with a finishing time of 7:12 and a pace of 6:00/km. Wish I could run that fast. By the way it’s a chip-timed event and this year they staggered the start with the older kids starting out first and each group following by roughly two minutes. The first few crossed the line in just over four minutes. Those are some speedy children.

So yes I’m a proud grandmother but what really makes me happy is seeing more and more young kids getting out there and being active.

We are always looking for interesting photos so if you’ve got a photo you would like featured, please leave a comment with the details. Better yet sign up for CRN’s Flicker Group.

I ran across this fascinating 1958 CBC radio clip of a discussion between Byng Whitteker – a radio announcer entrenched in his belief that exercise is only good for children – and fitness advocate Lloyd Percival.

The world has changed a great deal in the past 50 years. In the clip, you get the sense that Lloyd was considered something of a wingnut with Byng being the rational one between them. Today, it’s pretty clear we’d have the opposite view of these gentlemen.

If you listen to the whole clip, you’ll be rewarded with a reference to something that seems ominously similar to the Atkins Diet. I don’t know about you but that seems freaky to me.

I was really impressed with Lloyd’s persistence and depth of knowledge. Listening to him makes me think that fitness wisdom has been around for a long time – the difficult part has always been to get people to hear the message.

Aaron posted an article on Children’s Running back in September. I’m an avid believer in children getting out there to run. I ran with my daughter when she was younger and now I run with my 5-year-old grand daughter. She has run several races and loves it. That’s why I was so excited when I accidently came across the KidsRunning.com.

KidsRunning is presented by Runner’s World and contains lots of great information to motivate youngsters. The graphics and layout are presented with a kid in mind. They even have Running Games. They look like a lot of fun and I can’t wait to try some of them with my little runner.

In the Columns section there are inspirational and informational writings by the editor, teachers, coaches and guest writers. There’s also a Resources section that lists some great books for kids to read about running.

The site has a lot to offer for youngsters and adults alike. If you’ve got a child who should be out there running, be sure to check it out.

Got a Web site to recommend? Leave me a comment with the details.

What you are about to see is a Children’s Learn to Run documentary filmed over a 10-week period at the school I taught at in Edmonton. During the 10 weeks, students were exposed to a variety of learn-to-run topics (see running program below video), and completed the program by participating in a Fun Run finale of one, two or five kilometers.

Highlights include runners and supporters contributing to Edmonton’s Foodbank, Edmonton’s Mayor addressing the runners and starting the race, and the 200 or so young runners all receiving finisher medals. It was an extremely successful program that I hope started some youngsters on life-long running careers.

I’d like to thank Kid’s Running for featuring some of the program’s details, and also the Running Room for sponsoring production of the video.

Below is the specific program I adapted for young runners wanting to complete a 1K, 2K or 5K final run. Start each session with a short, useful, interesting topic for the kids, and then go outside for your run. Try it with your kids at home or at school. Whatever you do, make sure you keep in mind that the main goal is FUN!10 WEEK LEARN TO RUN PROGRAM:

1K and 5K Schedule of Topics
For the 1K, complete only half of the sets.

Week 1: Introduction: Building the House
(run 1 min., walk 2 min. – 6 sets)

Week 2: How to Buy the Right Shoes/Apparel
(run 1 min., walk 1 min. – 10 sets)

Week 3: Proper Stretching Techniques
(run 2 min., walk 1 min. – 6 sets)

Week 4: Hot/Cold Weather Running
(run 3 min., walk 1 min. – 5 sets)

Week 5: Breathing
(run 4 min., walk 1 min. – 5 sets)

Week 6: Nutrition
(run 5 min, walk 1 min – 3 sets)

Week 7: Form & Posture
(run 6 min., walk 1 min. – 3 sets)

Week 8: Keeping it FUN
(run 8 min., walk 1 min., run 4 min. – 2 sets)

Week 9: Life Long Running
(run 10 min., walk 1 min. – 2 sets)

Week 10: RUN Day Preparation
(run 10 min., walk 1 min. – 2 sets)

Week 11: 1K and 5K START-TO-FINISH RUN – with medals awarded to all finishers.
