The Mile High Club: Running at Altitude »

Are you a member of the Mile High Club? No, not the one that involves airplanes and sardine can acrobatics. I’m talking about running at elevations of 5,280 feet and higher. [ad#inPost-Big] Living in Denver, all of my running is done at a high altitude and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Running at a lower altitude than you’re used to can leave you feeling like…

A Million Stories »

There was a time when I was able to easily visit all of the members of the Running Blog Family. I loved it (still do). We were truly like a little family - all supporting, teaching and encouraging one another. Today, the RBF is a really big family! We've become a community of hundreds of runners but what makes me most happy is that everyone still supports, teaches and encourages one…

I found a terrific little archive of elite runner videos on GodTube. As of today, there are six episodes including many of America's great runners including, Josh Cox, Meb Keflezighi, Dan Browne and Ryan Hall. My favorite - embedded below - is one that focuses exclusively on Ryan Hall. You'll find the rest of the videos at this link…

Thumbs Up for “Spirit of the Marathon” »

You have never seen so many fit and healthy people in a movie theater. Spirit of the Marathon had a nationwide, one-night showing in some 460 theaters. It was an event and film worthy of its subject matter. Many of us have been waiting a long time to see this film—long enough to remember when it was called Land of the Gods: The Legend of the Marathon and the producers were looking…

Seeking Orthotic/Shoe Harmony? »

You’ve just dropped $300-$500 US on brand spanking new orthotics, popped them into your $120 running shoes and ouch! It feels like you’re running with two planks strapped to your feet. Toe off—are you kidding? Tempo runs? No chance! And now you’re sore in areas that you never had problems in to begin with. Did you just waste big dollars on orthotics that are no good? Thankfully, the answer is…

Crunchy Nanas?! »

A Crunchy Nana? What's that? Well, it's a runner, of course! A runner from our blog community to be precise about it. Let's get to know this oddly labeled runner. Nora doesn't like mushy bananas. Nope. They give her a fit. She likes Crunchy Nanas. Yup. Every last bit. (sorry, my boy is five and into Dr. Seuss) What makes Nora rock? Well, I've only known her a short time but it…

Marathoner Wesley Ngetich Dies in Kenyan Chaos »

The ongoing violence in Kenya has claimed the life of a second prominent athlete. Wesley Ngetich, a two-time winner of the Grandma's Marathon with a personal best of 2:12, was killed on Monday near the Tanzanian border in Trans Mara. According to his manager, Ngetich, 34, was hit in the chest by a poisoned arrow. It is unclear whether Ngetich was defending himself. He leaves behind a wife and three children…

Young, Female, Running & Dieting? Read This »

When we think of running nutrition, our minds turn to what foods will help us run faster, better, easier. What foods give our bodies the pep they need to sustain our high-energy pursuits. But, there’s also that other consideration: how can not eating enough, especially during critical growth periods in our lives, affect our body structure and health when we take out more than we put in? Researchers at San…

Share Your Music Playlists! »

It's no secret that the iPod and MP3 players in general have become quite an important part of many people's running experience. I, myself, have never been one to run with music ...until now. My wife bought me an iPod Shuffle for Christmas, and I was pleasantly surprised how quickly I grew to love running with it (it's so small!). I don't run with it every time, but it really ads…

Photo of the Week: Little Runner »

Little two year old Athan had a great time running the Kid's Fun Run at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex. It was his first "running" event but I bet it won't be his last. Don't you wish you could bottle up that energy and buy it for yourself. The Spirit of the Marathon – January 24, 2008 »

There is a one day showing of the movie The Spirit of the Marathon on January 24, 2008. It is playing in many cities across the nation and tickets are available on-line. I've included a trailer to what promises to be an inspirational and interesting documentary following the marathon journey of both amateur and professional runners in a full length film    [YouTube:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8XSit8XyeM] Again you can read more about the movie here…

The View From the Front »

My lovely wife signed up for a 10-week half-marathon training program and I decided to join her. The program is organized by the local Fleet Feet store and primarily focuses on beginners and shorter-distance runners wishing to try the half. The program caters to all speeds and techniques so each Wednesday and Sunday there are about 300 participants divided among four or five coaches. It's a little weird for me, having already…

Retail Therapy: Men’s Response Long Sleeve Crewneck »

Spring is on the way, and it's the perfect time for long-sleeve tees while running—the weather is cool but not too cool. This relaxed-fit shirt from Adidas keeps sweat away and keeps your muscles warm and dry. Flatlock helps prevent chafing and skin irritation and the reflective details are great for night or early morning runs. Available in three colors, but I’m digging the black and white. Response Long Sleeve…

Your Running News Roundup »

One of the biggest controversies in my running club is whether to allow headphones during races. Last year USA Track and Field banned portable music players and headphones at its races. I don't run with an MP3 player (but I don't mind if you do). The New York Times notes that listening to music during exercise can improve results, both as a motivator and as a distraction…

Do You Need a Doctor Who Runs? »

Every runner who has been at it for more than a few months likely has come up with some kind of ache, pain or injury that was serious enough to land you in a doctor's office. After hearing from your spouse, friends and co-workers that the answer to your problem is, of course, to stop running, you're probably sitting in that waiting room with a mixture of apprehension and hope…

Pistorius Ineligible for Olympics, IAAF Rules »

Oscar Pistorius’ Olympic dream has come to an apparent end after the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) ruled the double amputee ineligible for the Beijing Olympics in August 2008. Pistorius, a 21-year-old sprinter from South Africa, has run 46.56 for 400 metres with the aid of prosthetic legs made of carbon fibre, fast enough to compete with the world’s best. He already holds world records for double amputees at…
