We've all been warned over and over to research charities before we donate to them, it's so sad that we now have to research the races that promise charitable donations as well. I run for Fred's Team, which raises money for pediatric cancer research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in NYC, and they sit you down the night of the marathon and tell you how and where the money was spent. Too bad more organizations don't do this.

I don't know what it is like for a huge race with thousands upon thousands of people, but for smaller races there is rarely anything left over after all of the costs of holding a race do donate anything from the entry fees themselves.

I direct a 1 mile race, and the majority of the money that we raise from charity comes from donations of local businesses.

Charity running associated with races is already controversial, so it's disappointing when races don't live up to their commitments. Most races are getting behind charity runners, and they can learn a lot from the charities themselves, like Team In Training and Susan G Komen for their integrity and unwavering leadership.
