NOVA’s Boston Marathon Callenge

We got a great email from NOVA today telling us about their upcoming show, NOVA’s Marathon Challenge.

In cooperation with the Boston Athletic Association and Tufts University, NOVA was granted unprecedented access to the Boston Marathon course. In the summer of 2006, we began following 13 hopeful novices as they took the first step toward completing the 26.2-mile race in April 2007. The participants come from diverse backgrounds – a young woman running in memory of her mother, who died in a tragic car accident; a working single mom; even a former NFL linebacker. The one unifying element is that none of them is currently a runner. Over the nine-month training period, exercise and nutrition scientists and doctors at Tufts University use sophisticated technology to monitor the physical transformations that the participants have undergone. The experience demands a transformation of mind and body, and NOVA cameras are there, following every step of the way. Who was able to finish the race and what type of changes did the runners experience?

You will have to watch the show to find out what happened!

“Marathon Challenge” will premiere Tuesday, October 30 at 8:00 pm on most PBS stations. Go HEREfor more information.

Here’s the trailer:

About 21stCenturyMom

I found myself at the age of 38 the single full time working mother of 3 small children. I took up running because I figured I could get the biggest benefit in the least amount of time. Swearing never to run a marathon I found myself going out for a 4 - 6 mile run several times a week. I ran my first marathon 6 years later. Five years after that I ran another and then the next year another. Then I got bit by the triathlon bug so now I split my time between running, swimming and cycling. This year I think I'll run another marathon. And next year - who knows?

I was under the impression that a runner wishing to run in the Boston Marathon had to run a “qualifier” in the year running up to the current Boston Marathon. It even states that on the Boston Marathon’s website. If that’s the case, how can the people in tonight’s Nova episode be novices? They would have had to run at least one other marathon? Right?

Chris – The first sentence quoted above says it all. NOVA got BAA to allow them to do this. Fair? That’s a whole other question.

You can also participate as part of a fundraising group like TNT so not everyone on that course is a blazing fast qualifier. Otherwise these 13 NOVA people would have been way, way, way at the back of the pack and all alone.
