This photo was taken after a marathon and tells it's own tale of how the runner felt. So how do you feel after running a marathon or any race for that matter?
Thanks to Lucy Ireland, aka Lucy in London for this great photo. You can check out Lucy's other photos over at her Flicker site.
We are always looking for interesting photos so if you’ve got a photo you would…
1. What are "shin splints"?
Shin splints are overuse injuries that occur in the lower leg. They may be due to a tearing of the muscle/tendon junction or inflammation where the muscle attaches to the bone (periostitis). Shin splints are now more commonly called medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS) when they involve the inner aspect of the lower leg.
2. What are the causes/predisposing factors of injury?
Any type of abnormal foot…
Via Scott Dunlap's A Trail Runner's Blog comes word that Rodale, Inc. is acquiring Running Times magazine.
From Scott's blog:
Today, Rodale, Inc., publisher of Runner's World magazine, announced the acquisition of Running Times Magazine for an undisclosed price. Both magazines have been doing well in the last few years (Runner's World has a base rate of 630,000 subscribers, while Running Times has 105,000 but is growing faster; both are increasing ad…
I'm a great believer in high mileage. While we all are, as they say, an experiment of one, and no two runners react the same to a certain type of training, a few principles do apply to all of us, and we can always learn from other's experience.
I've been a runner for nearly three years. I have run a marathon twice a year, with six months between each. How did…

Today I give you a video of my bud Dean Karnazes.
Dean is by no means the only guy in the country who suffers from a certain version of lunacy that compels him to run in 100+ mile increments but he's the only one I've met personally. For 2006 his shtick was to run 50 marathons in 50 days in 50 different states. When he got done…
I was contacted a while back by the folks over at Matisse &
Jack's to give their Trail Blaze bake-at-home oatmeal energy bars a try. i'm always one for trying out new products and their pitch for the bars sounded great. Bake 'em yourself, save some money, no packaging or preservatives and enjoy a home baked flavor instead of the typical packaged bars like Clif or Powerbar.
The boxes arrived…

Why should your gym bag be boring? Take a look at this one available at Lucy, it has plenty of room for your running shoes, water bottles, a change of clothes and any other essential marathon gear. It’s also great for those spontaneous weekend getaways. And with spring on the way, this pattern will blend right in. It's lightweight and durable. Check your bag with style.
Available at Lucy…
The American Red Cross estimates that half the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood, but only 5 percent ever does. Some of us are scared; some of us are busy; and some of us worry about a donation's effect on exercise.
Removing a pint of blood does have immediate and residual impact on workouts. But with proper preparation and realistic expectations, it's possible to help save lives and still reach…
Time for this week's charity roundup! If you're looking for some worthy causes, you've come to the right place.
First up: Layla, of Nonplussed (you know, that state of being at a loss as to what to say, think, or do. I'm very familiar with this state).
Layla is training with the The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and in preparation for the San Diego Rock 'n' Roll Marathon
on June 3rd, and…
The finish line is in site. Do you dog it, crawl or are you a sprint finisher? I'm a back of the pack runner but put a finish line in front of me and I can run like there's no tomorrow.
Thanks to Amelia, aka shutterbug_girl for this great photo. Amelia is training for her first half marathon and you can check out her other photos over at her Flicker…
f you've ever run a marathon what you probably experienced was a start that required separating people into corrals by time to make sure the start was staggered. You probably had to shuffle along for many yards and were probably passed and then passed others for a couple of miles. The water stations stretched for blocks and thousands lined the streets, cheering you on.
Not all marathons are that huge, or…
Are you training for a marathon? Does part of the training plan call for hill training? Just what is involved in hill training? Does one really need to train on hills if the planned race is going to be flat? And just what if the race is going to be rather hilly like perhaps Big Sur?
Well I stumbled onto the answers for some of these questions at a fellow blogger's…
Let me get this out of the way right up front: The Teva X-1 is the best trail running shoe I've ever worn, and may well be the best running shoe of any kind I've worn. That's not to say that it's the perfect shoe for everyone, but it's definitely worth your time to check it out the next time you're in need of a new pair.
The X-1 is technically…
I've been a Nike Tempo shorts girl for some time now. But recently at a trip to my local running store, the clerk suggested I try the Epiphany Stretch Short by Brooks. I did and I love them! This is my new favorite running short!
The mesh panel along the side increases ventilation and the side-split fabric makes a sexy swishing motion that is too fun! The fabric…
It's been getting tougher to run in colder corners. If you aren't careful, frozen hair breaks off. Exposed skin chaps. The brutal air can compromise vulnerable bronchial passages, leading to illnesss or exercise-induced asthma. Water bottles turn solid quickly, spelling trouble for those trying to stay hydrated on long runs. The slick roads and snowy sidewalks are dangerous, too.
The gym suddenly seems a lot more inviting.
Whether you wish to…
UPDATE: Gigi says she has enough responses to continue with her story. Thank you and good luck to all of you who commented!
Gigi, a journalist on assignment for Runner's World, contacted us looking for people who might fit into a story she's writing.
Do you consider yourself a competitive runner? "Competitive" does not solely mean you get competitive results (i.e. you win races or place highly in your age category). It…
This photo was taken with 21 miles down, 5 miles to go at the OC Marathon.

It's a new week, and a new batch of fundraisers!
Charlie, aka ShoreTurtle—Running in and Around New Jersey is raising money for Special Olympics.
Charlie writes:
On February 24th, I will be joining several thousand people in a Polar Bear Plunge for Special Olympics. Over the past 14 years, this event has helped more than 15,000 athletes train and compete free-of-charge, year-round in 21 Olympic-type sports. This will be my 3rd year…

CRNs very own Lee Miller recently wrote an excellent article on Plantar Fasciitis (PF) which I'd like to use as a starting point for today's article. What prompted me to write on this subject is that lately I've noticed a few people (like our editor, Jeanne) suffering from PF.
Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor. In fact, I have no formal medical training. What I am is a longtime runner who's made…
We often hear about V02 Max but rarely get a glimpse at a real life accounting of the outcome of such a test. Now we have one. Head on over to Scott Dunlap's Trail Runner's Blog for a nice summary of his recent V02 Max test…
Occasionally you do things other than run, right? Okay maybe not, but I'm sure that special someone, runner or not, would love this Murano Heart Bracelet, because truly, it's to die for. Thankfully the Italians can do more than fuel us with pre-race pasta.
Available at Red Envelope. Set of 3, $58.00.
But if the perfect running gift is a must, try this Heart Hoodie by Yogi. The tie-die heart…

To keep runners motivated throughout the winter, the Calgary Roadrunners does a Cross Country Race series called the Grand Prix. It consists of 10 races on various trails throughout the various parks in Calgary. The races are 8 or 4 km and usually one can expect to run on mud, snow, ice, narrow trails and of course lots of hills.
More pictures can be viewed on the Calgary Roadrunners photo page…
