Video: Alan Webb’s High School World Record Mile

January 26, 2007 | Tags:

Alan Webb is one of the great hopes for American distance running. In this video clip, he takes the field as a high schooler competing against established world-class athletes including such greats as Hicham El Guerrouj and astounds the world with a time of 3:53.43 in the mile - beating a high school world record previously set by Jim Ryun which had been unbroken for 36 years.

Since this record, Alan Webb has shown glimpes of greatness - greatness that appears to have not fully revealed itself. Let’s hope he’s not done growing as an athlete.

I just got to see him race last night at the Boston Indoor Games; he won the mile pretty handily.

That’s really something. I’ve seen that race few times and I love watching it every time. A high school student running 3:53 is very, very special.

Sheesh. I’ll be happy to break 7:00 this year. ;)

Got something to say?
