I was training for a marathon because ultimately that is my main goal to run a fast marathon. I used to be a fast runner but since graduating college running has kind of taken a backseat to life. So I've slowed down considerably.
Starting to run again I set a goal to run a sub 3 hour marathon. However I can't even run a sub 20 minute 5k anymore. I was training and building up mileage but all slow. I soon realized I need to go back to my roots, do some speedwork, develop some speed in the shorter distances and then eventually over time I can move up to the marathon and hope to run it fairly fast.

By starting with very short intervals and working your way up to 800m you can build a solid speed base. Then, by going back down to shorter intervals after a few weeks to test your gains, you’ll be able to see if your approach bares itself out. Incorporating speed training for the first time in my training right now, I made a few mistakes upfront, I think. This will definitely help!

Thank you for this article, Dennis.
