Karen’s RBF Motivational Challenge

A Motivational Penguin Challenge to the RBF:

I am inviting you to come to Frostbite Falls with the Penguins this year! Frostbite Falls is an imaginary destination. It’s an old Penguin Brigade
tradition: At the beginning of January, everyone chooses a distance he or she as an individual wants to cover that month, and that’s how far it is to Frostbite Falls for them. It has become customary to announce a potluck food item we are also bringing along to share when everyone meets up at the Falls. We then make progress reports as we travel along our imaginary route.

It’s not easy to travel on foot in January; sometimes Boris and Natasha (from the Bullwinkle cartoon) make trouble for us with blizzards and depressing fogs.

There are Tri-Penguins who swim and bike some of the way, and others ski or snowshoe too. If you cross-train, work out an equivalent mileage for your efforts, and add them to your goal.

Some folks get there early and heat up the imaginary hot tub, and some don’t get there until clean-up time, around January 32 or 33rd, but we have a lot of fun encouraging each other along the way.

When we accomplish our distance, we announce our arrival and party while cheering others in.

What is your fitness/distance goal for January? Dawn has a great Excel spreadsheet she uses for planning and tracking her mileage. If you don’t have a log of your own, try hers.

How far is it for you to get to Frostbite Falls this year? How are you getting there? And most importantly, what are you bringing to the party!

[…] Enjoy your Christmas and eat hearty. You will need your strength for January’ s Challenge issued by Karen. Mind you, just how much you need will be up to you. I have yet to decide how far away the trip to Frostbite Falls is for me. Nor have I decided just how I will get there. Check out the details on the RBF page. […]

  2. Trimama on December 29th at 3:42 pm

My first step will be to set up a training log… this sounds like a fun way to train through dreary January–although sometimes I think I live in the actual frostbite falls.

  3. All Downhill From Here » 2005 Recap - Long on December 29th at 6:23 pm

[…] This is a long one, with lots of links to past posts, so if you’re in the mood for some reminiscing with me, get yourself a cup of coffee and enjoy the review. Hopefully in the next day or two I’ll post my 2006 goals and how far away Frostbite Falls looks to me this January. […]

[…] Well, I’m going to try my best to meet Nancy, Tri-Mama, and the rest of the gang at Frostbite Falls this year. To some people my journey to Frostbite Falls may seem like a stroll in the park. There are many, many people who have to travel much farther to get there than I do. To me, however, I see that 9000 yard swim down the Potomac as a breathless struggle against my own bad form and each step of the the 20 miles I’ll have to run as potentially causing a new and frustrating injury. When I do finally make it however, I’ll at least be among friends whom I know have each worked as hard (if not harder) than I have to get to this party. As for a time frame, I have no idea when I’ll be able to make it. I hope to be there by the 20th to fire up the grill and start catching a few fresh salmon to add to the feast. If it takes me a few days longer, so be it, but rest assured that I WILL be there! […]

  5. Dawn on the Run » Frostbite Falls on January 1st at 11:33 am

[…] Okay this month’s challenge is a trip to Frostbite Falls. I can hardly wait to get there and soak in the hot tub. Like Karen, I suspect the trip will be a little over 100kms (60 miles) away by foot but like last year I may look for a short cut near the end of the month. I’ve decided to travel light and I’m having Little Penguin Wines ship a couple of cases of wine – one red/one white to arrive when I do. If it gets there before me, save me a bottle of the white eh. I’ll pack up some different cheeses to bring along as well to go with the wine. […]

  7. Dawn on the Run » Frostbite Falls Update/Rundown on January 29th at 5:48 pm

[…] So this month’s challenge was an imaginery run to Frostbite Falls. You set the distance and the activity to get you there. Post about it all month and of course bring a treat to share with your friends when you get there. […]

  8. Dawn on the Run » Splash on January 31st at 6:45 pm

[…] That’s the sound I made just now as I hopped in the hot tub at Frostbite Falls. I finally made it. Actually I ran a little past to find a good place to hide and change into my swimsuit. No one even knew it was me when I ran by, as I was wearing a lime green jacket instead of my trademark pink. […]

  9. Penguin Stampede » March Challenge - Stepping Outside the Box on March 1st at 4:52 pm

[…] For each month of 2006 either myself or Karen will post a challenge. January was the trip to Frostbite Falls. February was Emulating our Olympic Athletes. So what is the new challenge for March? […]

  10. All Downhill From Here » 2007, Here I Come on January 2nd at 8:23 am

[…] ORN: Last night I started my annual January journey to Frostbite Falls by running and walking 5 km. I made myself run up both the small and big hills, only walking for a bit at the top. There was only a little bit of ice, and the chinook wind blew 7C/45F air around me. If anyone would like to meet me there, I’m bringing Kahlua for the coffee and potato lefse rolled up with butter, cinnamon and sugar […]

  11. All Downhill From Here » Aren’t the Falls Lovely This Year? on January 31st at 10:23 pm

[…] I made it to Frostbite Falls again! This year I even made it on time, without a short-cut, and did a few victory laps before unpacking my lefse to share with all the other Penguins. Last year I didn’t get to FBF until January 35th. Make room in the hot tub, Penguin buddies, I’m diving in! […]
